Newcastle Circle Trafford Again as City Keeper Eyes Summer Escape

James Trafford's prospects of regular football at Manchester City appear increasingly bleak, and Newcastle United are preparing to test the waters once more for the 23-year-old goalkeeper.

The Magpies have maintained their admiration for Trafford since he spurned their advances last summer to join City following an eye-catching promotion campaign with Burnley. Circumstances have shifted dramatically in the months since, however. Unconvincing early showings and the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma on the market have left the young shot-stopper marooned on the bench, restricted to cup appearances and seemingly facing an uphill battle to force his way into England's World Cup reckoning.

Newcastle are circling again according to reports, with Aston Villa and Leeds United also keeping tabs on Trafford's situation. The Tyneside club see him as a potential long-term successor to Nick Pope, whilst Villa view him in similar terms regarding Emi Martinez. Any Newcastle move would hinge on the performance of on-loan Aaron Ramsdale, who has failed to convince so far. Pope himself remains contracted until 2027 despite being 33 years old.

Trafford's frustration bubbled to the surface during a recent FA Cup outing against Salford, where he acknowledged the campaign had fallen short of expectations. "It was nice, it wasn't what I expected coming into the season," he reflected. "I tried to guard against it. It's the reality and I have to give it my best shot. It's the situation I'm in. We train every day but making saves, it's good fun."

Manager Pep Guardiola has already ruled out a winter exit for his keeper, though he left the door ajar regarding summer possibilities. "He's an incredible keeper," Guardiola said. "Unfortunately for him Gianluigi is the first-choice keeper but he is an incredible keeper. I know the position of the keeper is so special and during the year in one game you can change. The keeper position is special. He is with us and will be with us this season and after we will see what happens."

Trafford himself is reportedly keen to engineer a move away from the Etihad, seeking the regular minutes that have proved elusive under Guardiola's stewardship.
