Wright Delivers Scathing Verdict on Scottish Football: "Letting the Country Down on a Massive Scale"

Ian Wright has laid into Scottish football with both barrels, declaring his sympathy for the nation's supporters who are being "let down on a massive scale" by those running the game.

With Steve Clarke's squad having managed just two shots on target across their opening two matches—a 1-0 victory over Haiti followed by a 1-0 loss to Morocco—the contrast between the travelling support and the team's output could hardly be starker. The Scottish fans have been a genuine highlight of the tournament; the football, rather less so.

Speaking on ITV, Wright didn't mince words when assessing the broader picture. "I feel sorry for Scotland, I feel sorry for the fans, I feel sorry for everything," he said. The ex-Arsenal striker then drew a damning comparison with Norway, a nation of comparable population. While Scotland's domestic league averages 16,000 attendances weekly, Norway manages 6,000 or 7,000—yet the Scandinavian country has secured a broadcast deal worth £25 million more annually.

"Look at Scotland's raw materials," Wright continued. "Amazing attendances, talent, storylines, grassroots participation. Somebody in Scotland is letting down this country on a massive scale. They're very proud of them all over the world, the tourists. They've got to do more. It's got to be a bolder, braver vision for Scottish football."

Scotland face Brazil in their final group fixture on Wednesday. Victory or a favourable result may be required to secure a spot among the eight best third-placed teams and progress to the knockout stages.

Neymar is available for selection after recovering from injury, though Clarke has stressed that Brazil possess far more than just their superstar forward. "His qualities are without question," the Scotland manager acknowledged. "He's one of the superstars of the modern era. We can expect a very dangerous opponent but I could go on about Brazil and so many dangerous opponents. Neymar is just one of them; even coming from the bench he would give them a lift because he is such an icon.

"Brazil have shown in the matches so far in this tournament that they are a big threat. I am sure they expect to be, as a minimum, last four of the competition."
