Ian Wright: Arteta's Arsenal Would Surpass Invincibles With European Glory

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has thrown down the gauntlet, declaring that Mikel Arteta's side would eclipse the fabled Invincibles if they complete a domestic and continental double this term.

The Gunners took a significant stride towards ending their 20-year Premier League drought with a dramatic 1-0 victory at West Ham on Sunday, courtesy of a late Leandro Trossard finish. The win proved contentious, however, when Callum Wilson's apparent equaliser from a corner was wiped out following a VAR review lasting over four minutes, with officials determining there had been contact on David Raya.

That controversial decision proved decisive, leaving West Ham stranded in their survival battle and drawing level with 17th-placed Tottenham on points.

With the league title tantalisingly close, Arsenal's focus now turns to European ambitions. They face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final on 30 May in Budapest, where they can secure their first-ever title in the competition.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Wright outlined why capturing both trophies would place Arteta's outfit above Arsene Wenger's 2003-04 vintage: "I think so. I would put them above the Invincibles simple because this team has got the capability of being invincible in the Champions League and to win the Premier League as well."

He continued: "As great as that Invincible team was and the individuals they had, this team will surpass them with what they've done because they will have done something that not even that great team did."

Wright praised the squad's depth and resilience throughout their campaign, highlighting the quality available from the bench to see out tight encounters. "They've built this squad and got the players on the bench to help finish games. They've done it all up until this point," he said.

Though acknowledging the calibre of their final opponents, Wright backed Arsenal to get the job done. "They're obviously playing a really good PSG side and it will be a battle of styles but they have got themselves there and they deserve to be there," he explained.

Should Arteta's men complete the double, Wright left little doubt about their place in the pantheon: "If they can finish it off, which I'm praying they can, of course they have to go down as Arsenal's best team in history."
