European Dreams Still Alive: How Every Premier League Club Can Reach Europe

The Premier League's qualification picture has become so delightfully convoluted that it's genuinely possible for any team from first to sixteenth to secure European football next season. Yes, really.

Aston Villa's passage to the Europa League final is the key that unlocks several scenarios. Should they lift that trophy, they could trigger a cascade of permutations that sees as many as ten English clubs earning continental competition next term.

The Champions League Certainties

Arsenal's 76 points make their top-flight status in the Champions League a formality. They've had quite the campaign, after all.

Manchester City's 71 points guarantee them a sixteenth consecutive season among Europe's elite, though Pep Guardiola's own future remains decidedly murky.

Michael Carrick has steered Manchester United back into the Champions League picture with 64 points, though his continuation as manager is another question entirely.

The Five-Spot Scramble

Liverpool sit on 58 points and are virtually assured of a top-five finish regardless of how many Champions League places the Premier League receives. If Villa win the Europa League and finish fifth, three points from their remaining matches would suffice for Klopp's men.

Aston Villa, also on 58 points, need just four from their final three league games to guarantee Champions League football, irrespective of their European final result. Victory in that final combined with a climb above Liverpool would block the door for any sixth-place finisher, though pragmatism might dictate they prioritise the cup. Crucially, winning that trophy gets them into the Champions League even if they lose every remaining league match.

The Sixth-Place Gamble

Bournemouth's 52-point tally sits six adrift, and they're banking on Villa's Europa success keeping them in fifth. If that happens, sixth place becomes Champions League territory for the Cherries. Even without Villa's intervention, sixth guarantees Europa League football—a European adventure of any description would represent new territory for the south-coast club.

The Conference League Contenders

Brentford's seventh-place perch currently earns them Conference League football. Should Villa win their final, nothing changes. If Villa lose and Manchester City win the FA Cup, seventh becomes Europa League qualification. But the Bees harbour bigger ambitions—they're just a point off sixth and there's an intriguing scenario where a final-day defeat to Liverpool could paradoxically propel them into the Champions League, provided Villa finish fourth after beating Liverpool next week and City win their cup final.

Brighton, on 50 points, face similar possibilities. They could find themselves needing a defeat to Manchester United on the final day to leapfrog into Champions League qualification via sixth. Realistically, though, climbing their current standing guarantees European football, with Conference League football possible from eighth depending on various cup outcomes.

The Cup-Dependent Hopefuls

Chelsea's route is straightforward: win the FA Cup and they're into the Europa League. The Blues could theoretically reach the Champions League via a sixth-place finish, though they're four points adrift with tough fixtures against Liverpool, Tottenham and Sunderland remaining. A Champions League place for this particular squad would be rather generous, all things considered.

Everton find themselves in a similar boat to Chelsea, also on 48 points. Their run-in against Palace, Sunderland and Spurs looks marginally kinder, though the gap to sixth remains substantial in their current form.

Fulham occupies the same points total and scenario as Everton, with the added bonus that a victory over Bournemouth this weekend could do them and several others a favour.

The Long Shots

Sunderland, on 47 points, faces a tough closing sequence, though clashes with Everton and Chelsea could prove decisive in the scramble for the top eight.

Newcastle's predicament is genuinely bizarre—they could theoretically finish in either the Champions League or the Championship, though the latter outcome would require cataclysmic collapse. A Mackem in Milan seems far more likely than a Geordie joining them.

Leeds United's 43 points leave them needing victory to guarantee safety, yet their inclusion in this feature owes entirely to the mathematical possibility—however remote—of Champions League football.

Crystal Palace need only beat Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final to secure Europa League football, arriving a season later than they'd have preferred.

Nottingham Forest's Europa League semi-final exit on Thursday night ended their Champions League daydreams. Now they're hoping for miracles: either a seventh-place finish or an eighth-place conclusion combined with favourable results elsewhere.

The Also-Rans

Tottenham's path back to Europe requires them to finish thirteenth—their best possible outcome—and hope roughly half the league simultaneously implodes.

West Ham are heading to Benidorm.

Burnley and Wolves, already relegated, can only watch and wonder what might have been.
