Yet as environmental scrutiny intensifies around the competition, one critical issue remains conspicuously absent from the conversation: the carbon cost of keeping the digital machinery running.

We've heard plenty about the carbon footprint of moving supporters, teams, and officials across three countries. Researchers from Manchester, Bristol, and Loughborough warned the expanded 48-team format could make this the most carbon-intensive World Cup on record, with travel accounting for roughly 7.8 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions. The maths is straightforward enough—move millions of people across a continent-sized tournament, and you rack up serious air miles.

But there's another story unfolding in the servers and data centres scattered across North America, one that's been largely overlooked.

Consider what happens when you settle in to watch a match. You're streaming the game on one device while tracking expected-goals data on another, scrolling social media, receiving push notifications from official apps, and perhaps placing a live bet through your phone. Multiply that by millions of simultaneous users, and the infrastructure demands become staggering. Every stream flows through networks and servers. Every betting market depends on real-time data processing. Every statistics feed licensed to broadcasters requires infrastructure capable of delivering information instantly across the globe.

Sports consultancy 5 Tool Sports Group estimates that digital ecosystems surrounding North America's five major professional sports leagues consume between 11 and 25 terawatt-hours of electricity annually, generating between 4.5 million and 14 million metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions. These figures should be treated cautiously—they're industry estimates rather than peer-reviewed research—but they highlight a fundamental question: as sport becomes increasingly digital, are we adequately considering the environmental consequences?

The situation has grown more complex with the explosion of artificial intelligence. Broadcasters now deploy AI-assisted production tools. Rights holders use AI to personalise content and recommendations. Sponsors increasingly rely on AI-generated marketing material. Fans have access to AI-powered analysis services at unprecedented scale. These advanced computing systems consume significant amounts of energy, yet football's sustainability accounting has barely begun to grapple with their impact.

The irony is stark. Modern football has become obsessively sophisticated at measuring almost everything—clubs track individual player movements, recruitment departments analyse millions of data points, broadcasters monitor audience behaviour in real time. Yet the environmental consequences of the digital systems underpinning these activities remain comparatively unexamined.

This doesn't mean streaming and betting rival aviation as the World Cup's principal environmental challenge. Digital consumption generates a fraction of the emissions produced by international travel. But digital activity isn't environmentally neutral simply because it happens out of sight. Those data centres consume substantial electricity, often located hundreds or thousands of miles from the supporters using them.

The environmental reckoning for the 2026 World Cup will ultimately be measured in air miles, hotel stays, and transport networks. That's where most of the emissions lie. But as football becomes ever more dependent on streaming platforms, betting operators, data companies, and AI tools, an increasing portion of the game's carbon footprint is being generated in places fans will never see.
