Hargreaves Points Finger at Arsenal: Just Two Players "Showed Up" in Bournemouth Humbling

Owen Hargreaves has delivered a damning assessment of Arsenal's display against Bournemouth, singling out only Declan Rice and Gabriel as worthy of praise following the league leaders' 2-1 defeat at the Emirates.

The Gunners' collapse was comprehensive. After Junior Kroupi's early penalty, Viktor Gyokeres levelled proceedings before Alex Scott's strike sealed a memorable victory for the visitors—a result that leaves Manchester City within touching distance. Should City win their two games in hand and then prevail in next Sunday's showdown with Mikel Arteta's men, they'll level on points at the summit.

This latest setback extends Arsenal's recent malaise to three defeats in four across all competitions. The run includes the Carabao Cup final loss to City, an FA Cup embarrassment at Southampton, and now this. Only a first-leg Champions League quarter-final victory over Sporting has interrupted the gloom.

"They didn't play with confidence," Hargreaves told Premier League Productions after witnessing the performance firsthand. "The crowd were right behind them early on, but by the end they weren't happy with what they were watching."

The former Manchester United midfielder was particularly scathing about Arsenal's inability to control proceedings. The hosts appeared utterly undone by Bournemouth's press, resorting to long balls and backwards passes with alarming frequency. Goalkeeper David Raya was among their most active players in possession, completing 39 passes—an eye-watering statistic that underlined their desperation to escape the stranglehold.

"The rest of them got thoroughly outplayed," Hargreaves said of those beyond Rice and Gabriel. "Bournemouth pressed the life out of Arsenal and they couldn't handle it. You're looking at one of the best pressing sides in the Premier League, and Arsenal simply weren't ready for what came at them."

Hargreaves identified a troubling pattern. "In three of the last four games, they've been outplayed—City in the League Cup final, Southampton in the Cup, and today. That's a trend you can't ignore."

The missing ingredients were stark. "They lacked courage, belief, and aggression in the crucial moments," he explained. "Bournemouth were the more aggressive team when it mattered, and they deserved to take the points."

Martin Keown has also voiced frustration at the squad's failure to utilise wonderkid Max Dowman when he appeared after the interval, adding another layer to what's becoming an increasingly fraught situation at the club.

Arsenal's title ambitions remain intact, but the margin for error has evaporated. The next fortnight will prove decisive.
