Flick's Newcastle Target: Barcelona Chief Told to Pursue Woltemade as Lewandowski Era Winds Down

Hansi Flick has reportedly made his transfer intentions crystal clear: Barcelona's sporting director Deco must bring Newcastle United's Nick Woltemade to Camp Nou this summer.

The Barcelona manager views the 24-year-old German international as the ideal candidate to bolster a strikeforce showing its age. With Robert Lewandowski now 37 and Ferran Torres prone to inconsistency, Flick has identified Woltemade as the perfect fit for his tactical blueprint.

Since arriving at St James' Park from VfB Stuttgart for £69million in summer 2025, Woltemade has accumulated 10 goals and four assists across 42 appearances under Eddie Howe. Hardly a blockbuster return for such an outlay, yet Spanish reports suggest Flick remains convinced of his potential.

The appeal is obvious to the German boss. Woltemade's physical stature, his capacity to retain possession under pressure, and his room for development align neatly with Flick's vision. More than that, having a fellow German in the squad clearly holds appeal. The reports emphasize that Woltemade is no celebrity striker, but rather a player capable of transforming Barcelona's attacking approach through both goals and the unglamorous graft that wins matches.

Flick craves a number nine capable of imposing himself against opposing defences, dominating physical contests, and offering tactical flexibility when Barcelona's famed passing game misfires. That extra presence in the box, combined with a reduced dependency on individual flashes of genius, is precisely what the Catalan giants believe they need. In Flick's assessment, Woltemade represents a world-class solution.

Yet there's a substantial problem: Newcastle have zero interest in selling. Woltemade remains contracted until summer 2031, a lengthy arrangement that underscores the club's commitment to keeping him.

More significantly, the striker himself shows no inclination to force the issue. German journalist Christian Falk revealed on 27 February that while Newcastle would entertain offers should Woltemade personally request an exit, no such conversation has taken place. The player hasn't approached the club expressing unhappiness in the northeast, and Newcastle haven't received any enquiries from interested parties.

For now, Woltemade's focus remains entirely on the forthcoming World Cup with Germany. He has no intention of engineering a transfer before that competition, and certainly not without Newcastle themselves having second thoughts about their investment. Both club and player remain aligned, with no discussions about a potential departure on the horizon.
