Kroupi's Chelsea Connection Could Spoil City's Transfer Plans

Where have all the proper strikers gone? It's the question that haunts every post-match pub conversation in England, usually sandwiched between complaints about VAR and how they're all paid too much these days. Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski get a nod, Harry Kane gets dismissed as "basically a midfielder now," and then there's Viktor Gyokeres and Alexander Isak to laugh about before someone inevitably brings up long throws.

Junior Kroupi? Most fans would draw a blank. Yet the 19-year-old Bournemouth striker is reminding everyone what a genuine goalscorer looks like. His 11th Premier League goal this season against Leeds suggests he's the real deal – a throwback talent in an era of false nines and inverted tens.

"My first thought when I watch him is Jermain Defoe," Jamie Redknapp declared on Sky Sports. "Unbelievable striker of the ball, great finisher. He gets that dip on it – it's ferocious."

Kroupi strikes the ball with the same ruthless efficiency Defoe possessed, having clearly spent countless hours perfecting his craft rather than chasing the modern forward's obsession with dribbling, pressing, and passing. His efficiency speaks volumes: 0.72 goals per game this season trails only Haaland's 0.81 in the Premier League.

Back at Lorient, Kroupi operated on the left wing before drifting infield – a style that drew comparisons to a certain Real Madrid superstar. Tiemoue Bakayoko, his former teammate and ex-Chelsea midfielder, was particularly effusive after Lorient's 3-3 draw with Lyon in 2023, where Kroupi bagged a brace.

"He's a phenomenon," Bakayoko said. "He reminds me a little of Kylian Mbappé in terms of the maturity of his game. He already has good stats for a youngster his age."

Pep Guardiola is apparently a keen admirer. Journalist Sacha Tavolieri reported to Sky Sports that Manchester City's director of football Hugo Viana has "met with the teenager's representatives" ahead of a potential summer move. Bournemouth have set an €80m (£69m) asking price, and no formal bid has materialised yet.

Liverpool and Arsenal have circled too, their expensive striker signings having disappointed this term. Chelsea, naturally, can't be ruled out – their appetite for young talent is well-documented.

But here's where it gets interesting. Fabrizio Romano revealed this week that Chelsea have "made contact" with Rayo Vallecano manager Andoni Iraola's representatives about their vacant managerial position. Iraola, the thinking goes, should be mad to take the Chelsea job under BlueCo's chaotic ownership. Except that's precisely why he should jump at it – it's the ultimate free hit.

More crucially for Manchester City's hopes, Kroupi has publicly praised his current boss's management style. Speaking to FourFourTwo recently, he outlined how Iraola has transformed his game.

"He's taught me about a new style of play and a new style of league," Kroupi explained. "I'm able to work on certain things I didn't work on when I was at Lorient, particularly from a defensive perspective – better positioning in the defensive phase or making a certain movement of a few metres that prevents me from having to make a long defensive run."

Then came the statement that could prove decisive in the summer transfer battle.

"When it comes to attacking, he gives me a fair amount of freedom," Kroupi said. "He also tells me to enjoy myself. That's the most important thing – to enjoy yourself and keep helping the team."

Here lies City's problem. Guardiola's system demands control – ordered brilliance rather than freedom. Rayan Cherki's arrival has forced some adjustment, but Manchester City's attack has never been about letting mavericks loose to do their thing.

Few players turn down the chance to work under Guardiola, even if it's only for one season. But if Iraola lands the Chelsea job, he offers Kroupi something the Manchester manager traditionally hasn't: the liberty to enjoy himself while delivering goals. For a teenager who clearly values that freedom, it could prove the decisive factor.
