Giggs Backs Wharton as Ready-Made Solution to Man Utd's Midfield Crisis

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs reckons the Red Devils have the perfect midfield candidate already waiting in the Premier League—and he's not shy about saying so.

The club's summer recruitment drive proved fruitful, with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammels all making promising starts in their opening campaigns. Yet with Champions League qualification looking probable and Casemiro heading for the exit, the Old Trafford hierarchy faces a clear midfield reshuffle.

Speaking on Webby & O'Neill's fan channel, Giggs laid out his vision for United's transfer priorities. With Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Rasmus Hojlund all out on loan, addressing those situations comes first—but midfield reinforcements cannot wait.

"It looks like Kobbie Mainoo is going to stay, Casemiro is going to go, Manuel Ugarte is going to go," Giggs explained. "We need to strengthen midfield without a shadow of a doubt."

The Welsh winger's eye for talent has settled on Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton, whose profile ticks several boxes. "I always like a left-footer in the team so I wouldn't argue with Adam Wharton," Giggs said. "To me, he looks like a Manchester United player. Somebody who can handle the ball, passes forward, runs forward—he's got Premier League experience."

Elliot Anderson also caught the former United star's attention, though Giggs suggested the club could pursue various combinations depending on budget constraints. "British players are a lot of money and what we're able to spend," he noted. "But we need two midfielders."

Both Wharton and Anderson have featured prominently on United's midfield radar in recent months. Carlos Baleba, once a summer favourite, has since fallen from grace as concerns mount over whether his performances justify the asking price.

Newcastle's Sandro Tonali, meanwhile, has climbed the shortlist considerably. The Italian midfielder is attracting interest from several heavyweight suitors, though reports suggest he would favour a move to Old Trafford should United secure Champions League football.

If United do land two midfielders as expected, the likelihood is that Tonali pairs alongside one of the English contingent—with Wharton emerging as Giggs's preferred option.
