Gerrard Set for Burnley Role as Parker Steps Down

Scott Parker's time at Burnley has come to an end. The 45-year-old has left his position as Head Coach by mutual consent following the Clarets' confirmation of their drop back to the Championship last week.

In a statement released Thursday, Burnley confirmed the parting: "Following confirmation of the Club's relegation from the Premier League last week, Parker and the Board held discussions and mutually agreed that his time at Turf Moor would conclude. The Club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Scott for his professionalism, dedication and contribution. He leaves with the respect and gratitude of everyone connected to Burnley Football Club."

Parker, who secured a remarkable 100-point promotion campaign just last season, has now stepped aside as Mike Jackson assumes interim duties for the remainder of the campaign. The club has already begun its search for a permanent successor ahead of next season's fresh start.

Enter Steven Gerrard. The Liverpool legend's representatives have entered talks with Burnley regarding the managerial vacancy, according to reports, with Gerrard having given the green light to discussions progressing. The 45-year-old would represent a significant appointment for the Clarets as they plot their return to the top flight.

Gerrard's managerial journey has been a mixed affair to date. His spell at Rangers proved fruitful, delivering the SPL title in 2020/21, but his subsequent stint at Aston Villa unravelled spectacularly—he was dismissed after winning just 21 of his 40 matches, a record that looked even worse when Unai Emery swiftly guided Villa into European competition and eventually the Champions League. An 18-month sojourn at Saudi Pro League outfit Al Ettifaq followed, yielding little of note, before he was released in January 2025. Since then, he has worked in a punditry capacity.

A Championship position represents the most realistic opportunity available to Gerrard at this juncture, and Burnley's vacancy appears tailor-made for a manager seeking to rebuild his credentials.

Parker, reflecting on his departure, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity. "It has been an immense privilege to lead this great club over the past two years," the outgoing boss said. "I have enjoyed every moment of our journey together, but feel that now is the right time for both parties to move in a different direction."

He continued: "I reflect back with great pride on what we achieved during my time at the club, especially our unforgettable promotion season in 2024-25, and it was a true honour to lead this team into the Premier League.
