James Milner has called an end to his playing days at the age of 40, bringing a close to one of English football's most enduring careers. The midfielder's 24-year journey in the professional game—predominantly spent navigating the Premier League's rigours—concludes with him firmly cemented as the division's most-capped player.

Milner's top-flight story began in 2002 when, as a precocious 16-year-old, he pulled on a Leeds United shirt for the first time. From there, his path took him through Aston Villa, Manchester City, Newcastle United, Liverpool, and ultimately Brighton & Hove Albion, where his final chapter unfolded.

The midfielder's record-breaking moment arrived in February when he surpassed Gareth Barry's long-standing Premier League appearance mark during Brighton's 2-0 victory at Brentford. That 654th outing proved to be the one that mattered most, though Milner would add four more appearances before stepping away from the game, bringing his total to 658 Premier League fixtures.

In a statement shared across social media, Milner reflected on a career studded with the sort of highs most players only dream of. "I've been fortunate enough to experience some unforgettable moments, from fighting for survival to winning trophies, playing in Europe, and representing my country, England, at two European Championships and two World Cups," he wrote.

The midfielder went on to emphasise what truly stayed with him across those two decades-plus: "But more than anything, it's the people and friendships I've made throughout the game that I'll cherish forever… I leave the game with immense pride, gratitude and memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Football has given me far more than I could ever have imagined, and I will always be thankful for the opportunities it provided."

His trophy cabinet tells its own story. At Liverpool, Milner collected the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup medals. His time at City yielded two Premier League titles, plus the FA Cup and League Cup. For England, he earned 61 caps before stepping away from international football in 2016.

A career defined by consistency, professionalism, and an almost mechanical ability to turn up and do the job—week in, week out—has finally reached its conclusion. Few will match what Milner leaves behind.
