Ferdinand Backs Anderson Over Newcastle Targets for United Midfield Overhaul

Rio Ferdinand has made a clear case for Manchester United to look beyond Newcastle United when addressing their midfield crisis this summer.

The Red Devils legend believes Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest represents a superior option to the Magpies' Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali—a stance he's backed with specific reasoning about what United actually need in the engine room.

United have shown marked improvement under interim manager Michael Carrick and are tracking Champions League qualification, but the summer transfer window looms large. The departure of Casemiro upon contract expiry will leave a significant hole, and Ferdinand reckons the club needs at least two midfielders to properly reshape the department.

Speaking on his preference for Anderson, Ferdinand highlighted the player's all-action approach and physical presence. "He's a wonderful player," Ferdinand said of the Forest star. "I think Elliot Anderson is the right type not only of player but character, I think he'd be a good addition to the squad."

While acknowledging Tonali and Guimaraes as genuine talents commanding widespread attention, Ferdinand argued they don't fit United's specific requirements. "The type of midfielder United need is somebody who is a bit more all-action, who can cover ground, who is dynamic, who is robust, strong, who can drive a team," he explained. "Right now Anderson seems to be ticking those boxes."

Ferdinand also referenced Carlos Baleba's form dip earlier in the campaign, suggesting the Brighton midfielder has slipped down the pecking order of potential targets after an impressive start to the season.

The hunt for midfield reinforcements remains fluid, however. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano cautioned that United haven't yet settled on specific targets. "At the moment, it is still an internal discussion, with players appreciated but no final decision made to move forward on a specific target," Romano stated.

Romano pointed to several variables that will shape the club's approach: budget allocation, Champions League qualification status, and crucially, who occupies the manager's seat. He noted that Ruben Amorim previously held strong admiration for Baleba at Brighton, but circumstances may have shifted considerably since then.

What remains certain is that United will be active in the midfield market when the window opens. The exact profile of player they pursue—and whether that's Anderson, Newcastle's contingent, or someone else entirely—will depend on those key decisions being made in the coming weeks.
