Ferdinand Backs Lewandowski Swoop for United as Free Agent Striker Weighs Up Options

Rio Ferdinand is backing Manchester United to make a move for Robert Lewandowski this summer, with the former Red Devils defender convinced the free agent could prove a shrewd acquisition.

Lewandowski departed Barcelona at the conclusion of the campaign and has emerged as a potential target for Old Trafford. The Polish forward, now 37, boasts an extraordinary CV: 629 career goals and 21 major honours, the bulk of them accrued during his successful spell at Bayern Munich before a 2022 switch to the Catalan outfit, where he claimed three La Liga titles.

Speaking on his YouTube platform, Ferdinand acknowledged that while Lewandowski's age might ordinarily make him an unconventional choice, his presence could prove invaluable for the club's long-term ambitions. The pundit specifically highlighted how the striker's vast experience could benefit young prospect Benjamin Sesko.

"If you believe Sesko is the man for the next five years, the learning he could do behind Lewandowski who is a wonderful, humble human being would be significant," Ferdinand explained. "He would teach and show Sesko the way and get him playing."

Ferdinand stressed that despite the potential salary complications, bringing Lewandowski aboard would represent sound squad planning. "That would be a sensible signing even if the numbers might be crazy in terms of wages," he added.

The pundit's broader assessment of United's summer business suggests multiple additions are necessary. He identified Atalanta midfielder Ederson as a target, whilst emphasising the need for "two or three midfielders to cover that area" with the mobility and dynamism required for the modern game.
