Ferdinand's Blueprint: Four Signings Could Set United Up for Next Season

Rio Ferdinand has mapped out what he believes Manchester United should target in the summer transfer window – and it's a measured prescription rather than a wholesale overhaul.

With the Red Devils occupying third place in the Premier League, seven points clear of Chelsea in sixth, they look well-positioned to secure Champions League football. Yet uncertainty lingers around whether Michael Carrick will be granted the permanent manager's job after his impressive spell in interim charge, which has yielded seven wins and just one defeat from ten matches.

Nonetheless, recruitment planning will be underway at Old Trafford, and Ferdinand reckons four new faces would constitute a "realistic" window without requiring the kind of radical surgery some might demand.

"If United go and get four players in the next window and two of those are starters, then I think that's a realistic transfer window," Ferdinand said on his podcast.

His shopping list is clear: two central midfielders – one established starter and a prospect to rotate alongside Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo; a younger forward to provide backup to their current attacking options; and a full-back.

"I know you can say you want ten new players and most positions can be improved but I don't think you need a huge revamp, it's still a lot but that's realistic," he added.

The Midfield Conundrum

Newcastle's Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes have featured prominently in transfer gossip, but Ferdinand has thrown his weight behind a different target: Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson.

The ex-United defender sees Anderson as the "all-action" midfielder the club genuinely needs – a player who combines industry with dynamism rather than pure technical brilliance.

"Beginning of the season everyone was talking about Carlos Baleba, he seems to have gone off the boil a little bit form wise," Ferdinand explained. "Elliot Anderson, he seems to have jumped to the front of the queue. I think he's a wonderful player."

While acknowledging Tonali and Guimaraes as significant talents, Ferdinand believes Anderson better fits United's requirements – someone who covers ground relentlessly, drives forward with purpose, and brings physicality to the midfield.

"I think the type of midfielder United need is somebody who is a bit more all-action, who can cover ground, who is dynamic, who is robust, strong, who can drive a team," Ferdinand said. "Right now Anderson seems to be ticking those boxes."

He hinted there are other young prospects worth monitoring too, though he's keeping his cards close to his chest for now.
