The quadruple. That mythical beast that emerges every few winters like clockwork, capturing imaginations before the fixture list inevitably crushes all hope under its relentless weight. Except this season is spoiling us rotten—for once, we've got not one but two genuine contenders still standing in March with everything very much in play.

Arsenal and Manchester City are locked in a concurrent pursuit of English football's holy grail, and the next three months will determine whether either can actually pull it off or whether we're heading for the familiar narrative of glorious collapse.

Early Cup Business

The quarter-final draw for the FA Cup takes place on March 9, with both teams safely through to the last eight. Arsenal needed to work harder against Mansfield than City did with Newcastle, but both are where they need to be. Whether they draw each other matters less than you might think—one will likely be eliminated by the other in the Carabao before the quarters are even played.

Between March 10 and 18, the Champions League last-16 awaits. Arsenal face Bayer Leverkusen in what looks a favourable tie for the Londoners, who've fallen from their previous heights. The FA Cup quarter-finals arrive April 4-5, followed immediately by the Champions League quarter-finals (April 7-15). Bonus points if City and Arsenal find themselves paired together again in either competition—the media will have an absolute field day with revenge narratives that absolutely nobody will keep a straight face about.

Chelsea's visit to City on April 12 looms large should the defending champions remain in the title picture. It's a potential banana skin in an otherwise manageable run-in, though City have shown a knack for finding demons where none obviously exist.

The Title Decider Arrives

April 19 brings the heavyweight clash: Manchester City travel to Arsenal. By this point, the quadruple pictures for both sides could be anywhere from crystal clear to hopelessly compromised. This fixture will carry enormous weight for the title race, though five full rounds remain after it, so it cannot be officially decisive. Still, the result here will almost certainly matter enormously—whether it's an "all-but" coronation for Arsenal, a "giant stride toward" the trophy, or a City win that "breathes new life" into their challenge remains deliciously uncertain.

The Fixture Puzzle

City versus Crystal Palace remains unconfirmed for now, a victim of the Carabao Cup final weekend shuffle. Palace's Europa Conference commitments mean it can't easily be rearranged, so it's likely landing the week commencing April 20—a potentially delicious timing if City have just beaten Arsenal and could snag a six-point advantage.

The Final Stretch

The FA Cup semi-finals (April 25-26) and Champions League semi-finals (April 29-May 6) arrive in quick succession. It's around this point you start to understand why nobody ever actually manages the quadruple—the fixture list is absolutely relentless.

Curiously, were the Champions League bracket fully seeded rather than pair-seeded, Arsenal might have been destined to face Spurs in the last four based on league phase performance. What a storyline that would have been.

The Finales

The FA Cup final on May 16 provides another chance for silverware. Pep Guardiola's record is instructive here—he's only won the FA Cup as part of a treble before (2018/19 domestically, 2022/23 continentally). Perhaps the quadruple changes that.

Premier League final day on May 24 sees City host Aston Villa while Arsenal travel to Crystal Palace. Should the title race remain alive by then, it'll make for compelling viewing. Villa might have their own Champions League qualification business to attend to, but Palace appear to be playing for little more than a fitting send-off for Oliver Glasner now relegation fears have lifted.

The Champions League final on May 30 represents the ultimate prize and the ultimate hurdle. Should either team still be chasing the quad at this point, we'll do our best to frame a domestic treble as a disappointment if they fall short. We suspect we'll manage it just fine.

It's tremendously exciting. It's also almost certainly going to end in tears for at least one of them.
