Rodri's Madrid Moment? Fabrizio Romano Confirms Real's Interest in City Star

The rumour mill has been in overdrive regarding Rodri's future, and now transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has stepped in to sort fact from fiction. The Real Madrid speculation around Manchester City's prized midfielder is very much grounded in reality.

Rodri's credentials speak volumes. The Spanish international claimed the Ballon d'Or in 2024 following a stellar year in which City secured three major honours while he played a starring role in Spain's Euro 2024 triumph, earning player of the tournament honours. Since joining City in 2019, he's been the embodiment of Pep Guardiola's midfield vision.

Yet his contract situation—expiring in 2027—has opened the door to intrigue. Real Madrid, perpetually on the hunt for elite midfielders, have reportedly identified him as a target, with some Spanish outlets suggesting €50m (£44m) could get the deal done given his age of 29 and the contract timeline.

Romano has now weighed in with substance behind the speculation. He confirmed that Real Madrid do indeed have admirers of Rodri within their management structure and that the midfielder represents a genuine summer option for the club. However, the ball is firmly in Rodri's court.

"Rodri is out of contract in 2027, and in the summer, he will face a big decision," Romano explained. "He'll decide in the next months whether he wants to stay at Manchester City and consider signing a new contract, or maybe—and this is not a financial decision from what I understand—it's also about the family and a personal decision on whether he wants to stay in Manchester, or maybe consider the possibility to try a new chapter."

The transfer guru emphasised that any Real move hinges entirely on Rodri's own inclinations. "For sure Rodri has fans internally at Real Madrid. He has people in Real Madrid's management appreciating him," Romano continued. "So for sure Rodri could be an option for Real Madrid in the summer, but it's Rodri who has to decide before any Real Madrid negotiation or attempt. It's Rodri who has to decide whether he wants to stay at Man City and consider signing a new contract, so closing doors to an exit. Or if he wants to say 'okay, thank you, I gave you my best, I won the Ballon d'Or, I won everything here as a club and player, so it's time for me to go.' It's up to Rodri."

The timeline suggests a resolution is imminent—the prospect of Rodri entering the final year of his City deal appears off the table entirely.

Adding intrigue to the narrative is Jürgen Klopp's reported involvement. The Liverpool legend is being linked with a managerial role at Real Madrid come summer's end, and Rodri is apparently viewed as a cornerstone signing for any potential Klopp project at the Bernabéu. Given that Rodri's performances have caused Klopp considerable headaches during his Premier League tenure, the German's admiration for the midfielder is hardly surprising.
