Luis Enrique to Stay at PSG as Man Utd Turn Focus to Carrick

Luis Enrique's future appears firmly rooted in the French capital, dealing a blow to those within Manchester United's corridors who have long harboured dreams of bringing the Spanish tactician to Old Trafford.

The 55-year-old PSG manager has established himself as one of world football's elite operators. He delivered a historic quadruple with the Parisian club last season, adding to his pedigree of winning a treble with Barcelona in 2014/15.

Speculation has mounted since January regarding a potential switch to Manchester United, with the Red Devils embarking on a thorough examination of their managerial options ahead of summer appointments. For many observers, Enrique represented the most obvious candidate to steer the club forward.

Yet according to Fabrizio Romano, that particular door is closing. The PSG boss is progressing towards agreeing fresh terms to remain in Paris, effectively removing him from consideration for the Old Trafford post.

Romano confirmed that genuine admirers of Enrique do exist within United's upper echelons, with at least one senior figure harbouring genuine ambitions of securing his services. However, the reporter emphasised that such sentiment remains aspirational rather than actionable.

"There is someone internally at Man Utd who is a big, big fan and dreams of Luis Enrique as Manchester United manager one day," Romano explained. "So there is some truth in the reports over the last two or three months about Enrique and Man Utd, in the sense that Man Utd have some people internally who have this thought of Enrique some day being maybe Man Utd manager."

"But nothing more than this because at the moment his focus is on PSG, negotiating his new contract, and on the pitch of course."

The development effectively strengthens Michael Carrick's hand in his pursuit of the permanent position. The interim manager has overseen United's affairs since the managerial change, and his performances have increasingly impressed the decision-makers tasked with resolving the club's leadership situation.

United remain committed to identifying their long-term boss for the 2026/27 season and beyond, though confidence in Carrick's current stewardship appears robust.

"Man Utd are very happy with the work done so far by Carrick. They are not doubting Carrick," Romano stated. "They are having their internal process to decide on the best solution possible for the managerial situation. We know they need to decide their permanent manager from 2026/27 and beyond, that remains the plans and internally they keep talking about this, but with full confidence in Michael Carrick."
