Tottenham Pull Plug on Palhinha Deal as Tonali and Fernandes Reshape Midfield

Spurs have called time on their pursuit of Joao Palhinha, ending hopes of converting his loan spell into a permanent arrangement. The Portuguese midfielder, who played a vital role in keeping Tottenham in the Premier League with a crucial final-day goal, will not be returning to north London.

The decision comes hot on the heels of two blockbuster midfield acquisitions that have left Ange Postecoglou's engine room bursting at the seams. Tottenham have shattered their transfer record twice in quick succession, first landing Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for £85m, then going even bigger with Sandro Tonali from AC Milan for £100m (£92.5m plus £7.5m in add-ons).

Palhinha's exit represents a casualty of Spurs' summer spending spree. The 28-year-old had agreed personal terms with the club, and a €30m (£26m) option to buy from Bayern Munich made the deal straightforward in theory. Yet with Fernandes and Tonali now in situ, alongside established talents like Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, Conor Gallagher, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Pape Sarr, central midfield has become hopelessly congested.

The logjam is particularly acute given Tottenham's absence from European competition this season—there's simply not enough football to go around.

Tonali's arrival has been sweetened by the presence of Roberto De Zerbi, the Italian manager whose appointment proved decisive in luring the former AC Milan man away from Manchester City and other suitors. With De Zerbi now commanding a midfield stacked with quality, Palhinha's chances of regular minutes have evaporated.

Despite his instrumental role in Tottenham's survival, Palhinha will depart having made his contribution when it mattered most. His departure signals Spurs' intent to reshape their squad around youth, talent, and ambition—even if it means letting go of a player who delivered when it counted.
