Chelsea Close to Sealing Chavarria Deal as Alonso Reshapes Left-Back Options

Chelsea are pressing ahead with a move to bring Rayo Vallecano's Pep Chavarria to Stamford Bridge, with both Fabrizio Romano and Ben Jacobs confirming that club-to-club discussions have progressed significantly.

The 28-year-old specialist left wing-back has already made clear to his current employers his eagerness to join the Blues and link up with Xabi Alonso, the newly appointed Chelsea boss. An initial bid of €9m (£7.7m) was rebuffed, but that rejection has done little to dampen Chelsea's enthusiasm for getting a deal over the line.

Romano outlined the current state of play on his YouTube channel, noting that formal negotiations between the two clubs are underway. "The player wants the move," he confirmed. "Chavarria told Rayo Vallecano that his desire is to go to Chelsea and to work for Xabi Alonso. Xabi's staff know the player so well, and now it's about reaching the financial agreement between the clubs, but according to my information, Chelsea are very optimistic to get this deal done."

Jacobs similarly reported that "club-to-club talks are advancing" and highlighted that the signing represents "another move driven by Xabi Alonso," with Chelsea specifically seeking specialist left-back and left wing-back options.

The transfer comes in the wake of Marc Cucurella's summer departure to Real Madrid, which left Alonso requiring reinforcements down the left flank. While the club retain faith in Dutchman Jorrel Hato, they've moved to bolster the position further.

Chelsea have already secured Valentin Barco from sister club Strasbourg, the versatile Argentine capable of operating at left-back. Chavarria's arrival would provide additional flexibility, particularly given Alonso's preference for a wing-back system during his successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.

Beyond the left side of defence, Alonso is pursuing a centre-back, a central midfielder, and a versatile attacking player. Crystal Palace's Maxence Lacroix is among those being considered for the centre-back role, with the BBC suggesting that move could be accelerated in the coming days.
