Henry Signals Arteta's Arsenal Future Under Threat as Fabregas Emerges as Potential Successor

Thierry Henry has warned that Mikel Arteta could find himself under the microscope at Arsenal if the season ends without a trophy, with suggestions that Cesc Fabregas may represent a tempting Plan B for the Gunners hierarchy.

The north London club's pursuit of unprecedented silverware has hit serious obstacles. Back-to-back defeats—first to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final, then to Southampton in the FA Cup—have dramatically narrowed their options. Their Premier League title charge, once commanding, now sits just three points ahead of City, who possess a game in hand.

In Europe, Arsenal face a trickier path than anticipated. Their 1-1 draw with Atlético Madrid in the Champions League semi-final first leg leaves everything to play for at the Emirates next week, but a potential final against either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich looms as a formidable obstacle.

The pressure on Arteta is intensifying. Since his appointment, he has failed to land a trophy, with the last piece of silverware arriving in 2020 when Arsenal lifted the FA Cup. That record sits uncomfortably given the investment in the squad and the early-season optimism surrounding their chances.

Speaking on CBS Sports, Henry acknowledged the reality facing his former club's manager. "The board is gonna have to decide what they are gonna do with Mikel Arteta," Henry explained. "After all those years and the amount of money on the table to have two teams, we have all said Arsenal have the best squad this season. At one point, you'll have to talk and answer some questions if you don't win. It is just a normal thing after so long. While it's all good and we are all supporting as Arsenal fans, but if it doesn't happen, like I always said, you are going to have to answer some questions that the board is going to ask you."

Fabregas in the Frame

Meanwhile, Fabregas has quietly emerged as an intriguing alternative. The Spaniard has impressed at Como, guiding the Italian side to promotion before steering them to fifth place in Serie A—just three points behind Juventus in the final Champions League qualification spot. His track record at the highest level is well-established: 303 Arsenal appearances as club captain, a spell at Barcelona, and two Premier League titles won during his time at Chelsea.

Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol has claimed, albeit with limited conviction, that Fabregas harbours long-term ambitions at the Emirates. "Cesc Fabregas, what I've been told, there's some kind of suggestion that long-term, the plan for him is to manage Arsenal one day," Solhekol suggested. "I'm not sure moving to Chelsea would be part of his career progression."

Como's sporting director Ludi has attempted to downplay the speculation. "We're calm. We're focused on these next few games," he said this week. "We're incredibly aligned with Cesc but we can't predict the future. However, I'm sure that we will continue this journey together."
