Conte Back on Chelsea's Radar as Blues Eye Experienced Tactician to Steady Ship

Chelsea are on the hunt for a new permanent manager after parting company with Liam Rosenior last week, with interim boss Calum McFarlane having steered the club into the FA Cup final in the interim.

Rosenior's exit came in the wake of a torrid five-game losing streak and seven defeats across their last eight matches, circumstances that had rendered his position increasingly untenable and seen him lose the confidence of his squad.

The Blues appear set to chart a new course ahead of next season, with reports suggesting they may opt for a seasoned, no-nonsense operator rather than continuing their recent policy of appointing less experienced candidates. Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola currently tops many observers' lists as the favourite, yet Chelsea's recruitment team is casting a wider net.

Among those being discussed is Antonio Conte, the combative former Chelsea boss, with speculation that the club's hierarchy have floated what some describe as a bold—if unconventional—move to bring him back to west London.

According to analysis from ex-Premier League chief scout Mick Brown, Conte finds himself very much in the conversation for the role. Brown identified two principal reasons why such an appointment could work: the Italian's relentless winning mentality and his authoritarian approach to man-management.

"What Conte delivers is that hunger to win," Brown explained. "He prioritises silverware above all else, and that's precisely what he'd import to Chelsea. His tactical methods could be exactly the medicine this squad requires."

Brown pointed to dressing room discord and player attitude as key factors in Rosenior's downfall—issues he suggested Conte would simply not tolerate. "He enforces discipline and brings vast experience. In that sense, he'd be perfectly suited," Brown added.

Yet the analyst acknowledged the elephant in the room. Appointing Conte brings baggage alongside his considerable virtues, and the club's decision-makers must weigh whether the benefits justify the headaches that have sometimes accompanied his tenure elsewhere.

"It hinges on whether Chelsea's board are prepared to accept both sides of the coin," Brown concluded. "If they reckon the positives outweigh the complications, then Conte deserves serious consideration."
