Enzo Maresca's exit from Chelsea last week has done little to dampen speculation linking him with the Manchester City hotseat. With Pep Guardiola's contract running until 2027 but talk of a potential departure at season's end, the Italian has emerged as the 'frontrunner' to inherit the Etihad throne.

Yet there's a catch. According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Maresca has laid down a marker with City's hierarchy: if they want him, they must secure Cole Palmer.

The Chelsea attacking midfielder, who turns 23 this year, represents Maresca's vision for Manchester's post-Guardiola future. The Italian views Palmer not as a peripheral addition but as the cornerstone upon which his entire tactical philosophy would be built.

Palmer's journey adds another layer to this saga. The academy product progressed through Man City's ranks before departing for Stamford Bridge in 2023 for approximately £40m. Guardiola deemed him surplus to requirements, unconvinced the youngster would receive sufficient minutes under his stewardship.

That decision now looks questionable. Palmer has blossomed into one of the Premier League's standout talents, accumulating 47 goals and 29 assists across 109 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea.

Maresca's credentials for the City job rest on his achievements at Chelsea, where he guided them to Club World Cup and Europa Conference League glory whilst securing Champions League qualification. Yet his tenure unravelled amid inconsistency, culminating in three league games without victory and a fractious relationship with the board over perceived inadequate backing.

City are apparently taking Maresca's demands seriously, weighing up the financial implications of repatriating their former academy graduate. Whether Chelsea would entertain such an approach remains another question entirely.
