Mourinho Makes Fernandez His Priority as Real Madrid Eye Chelsea Star

Real Madrid have zeroed in on their next major signing, with Jose Mourinho placing Enzo Fernandez firmly at the top of his wishlist as the club accelerates its summer overhaul. The Argentine midfielder has become the focal point of Los Blancos' midfield recruitment strategy, particularly following Wednesday's confirmation of Bernardo Silva's free transfer arrival.

Fernandez's future at Stamford Bridge has become increasingly uncertain. The midfielder, who joined Chelsea from Benfica for a British-record £105m in January 2023, has made his desire to leave abundantly clear. When pressed about his prospects at the club in March, he offered little reassurance: "I don't know, there are eight games left and then the FA Cup. Then there's the World Cup, and then we'll see."

The 23-year-old has been candid about his admiration for the Spanish capital, expressing a keen interest in relocating to Madrid. "I'd like to experience, I don't know, live there," he reflected. "I really like Madrid, it reminds me a lot of Buenos Aires." He also took the opportunity to voice his bewilderment at Enzo Maresca's sacking, a sentiment shared by many observers.

His pathway to the Bernabeu appears increasingly clear. Marc Cucurella has already committed to joining Real Madrid in a £52m deal, and Fernandez is now keen to follow his Chelsea teammate across Europe. Transfer specialist Ben Jacobs reported this week that the midfielder remains determined to exit the Premier League, with Real Madrid currently deliberating on their ideal midfield composition.

Chelsea's asking price sits at £120m, though the club are understood to be open to negotiation should an acceptable offer materialise. Crucially, manager Xabi Alonso has signalled his willingness to facilitate a departure, having made clear his preference not to retain players lacking full commitment to the project. Fernandez's agent, Javier Pastore, is well aware of Real Madrid's pursuit and the player's own ambitions.

Real Madrid are keen to accelerate proceedings and wrap up their transfer business expeditiously. To sweeten the deal and reduce the outlay required, the Spanish giants are considering offering Chelsea a player in exchange.

Eduardo Camavinga has emerged as a potential swap candidate. Former Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit believes the French international could prove an astute acquisition for the Blues. "Eduardo Camavinga in a swap deal with Enzo Fernandez? Why not?" Petit mused. "Camavinga is still a very young player. He left Rennes for Madrid when he was eighteen years old and he has played for six or seven years for Real Madrid."

Petit highlighted Camavinga's trophy haul and experience as significant assets. "He has won some big trophies too. This guy has been an amazing young prospect," the former Arsenal man explained. He emphasised that while Camavinga's recent form at Madrid has been difficult to assess amid the club's wider struggles, his pedigree and silverware collection would strengthen Chelsea's midfield. "Camavinga can be very good because we know that at Chelsea most of them are young players. He's got experience. When you come from Real Madrid to Chelsea having won many trophies and played there for so many years and you play for the national team, you arrive at the club with experience that's probably missing at Chelsea. Camavinga is a talented player, he would be a great fit."
