Fernandez's Agent Hits Back at Chelsea Over Two-Game Suspension

Chelsea have found themselves at the centre of a brewing dispute with Enzo Fernandez after slapping a two-match ban on the Argentine midfielder for controversial remarks made during the recent international break. Head coach Rosenior announced the suspension ahead of Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale, a move backed by the club's ownership structure BlueCo.

The 25-year-old has been among Chelsea's standout performers this campaign, yet recent weeks have seen him dominate the back pages for rather less flattering reasons. In particular, Fernandez took aim at the club's hierarchy, BlueCo, and Rosenior himself whilst also dangling the prospect of a potential switch to Real Madrid.

Fernandez's agent Javier Pastore, himself a former PSG midfielder, has now waded into the fray by challenging what he describes as an unfair punishment. Speaking to The Athletic, Pastore suggested his client had simply been misunderstood.

"Enzo didn't understand the situation," Pastore explained. "When the coach told him, he accepted it because he's a highly professional guy who's always fully committed wherever he is and respects decisions, but we don't understand the punishment because he doesn't mention any club or say he wants to leave Chelsea, far from it."

The agent went on to clarify the Madrid reference, arguing it was nothing more than a throwaway response to a hypothetical question about where Fernandez might wish to live elsewhere in Europe. "He only mentions Madrid, the city, because he was asked which European city he'd like to live in one day, and he said Madrid because of the language, because it's similar to Buenos Aires and because it's logical — it's only natural for an Argentine to say that — and also because of the culture, the weather," Pastore said.

"But at no point does he say he wants to leave Chelsea or London."

The row has exposed deeper fissures between player and club, particularly regarding contract negotiations. Fernandez remains locked into a deal running through 2032, having penned an eight-and-a-half-year agreement back in January 2023 with an additional 12-month extension already triggered. Yet discussions over improved terms have stalled.

Pastore revealed that contract talks began around December or January but failed to reach a satisfactory conclusion. "As Enzo's contract still has six years to run, we decided not to renew it because the terms weren't right for us or for the player; given what Enzo is capable of today, he deserves much more than he's currently earning," the agent stated.

"We haven't reached an agreement and it may be that this annoyed the club, given that he is a hugely important player, but these are things that have to be managed. I look at the sporting and financial aspects of the player's situation, and I didn't see that renewal coming to fruition because they weren't very realistic about Enzo's current situation."

With negotiations having yielded no progress, Pastore has signalled that Chelsea face a ticking clock. "Our plan after the World Cup is to meet with Chelsea again and, if there is no agreement, to explore other options," he warned, suggesting the club could find themselves fighting to retain one of their key assets come summer if the impasse continues.
