Tuchel Explains Bellingham and Rice Calls Ahead of Panama Clash

Thomas Tuchel has laid out his reasoning for shuffling England's pack ahead of the Panama fixture, with injury concerns and tactical considerations driving five changes to the starting XI for Saturday night's Group L finale.

With Reece James, Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson all nursing knocks, the England boss has opted to rest Rice entirely while Anderson features. James faces an uncertain return date for the knockout stages. Jarell Quansah, Nico O'Reilly, Morgan Rogers, Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford have all earned starting berths in place of those sidelined or rested.

Bellingham will drop into a deeper midfield position to partner Anderson, with Rogers operating as the attacking midfielder—a shift from the pre-tournament narrative surrounding the two players' battle for England's No.10 role.

"We're well prepared," Tuchel told reporters. "We have a strong squad to select from and the target is to speed up the game because it's very difficult when we're always playing against 10 men defending with such devotion and commitment. We have things to improve."

On the rationale behind the wholesale changes, the England manager added: "I'm always excited about my team. It's a strong group with plenty of options."

When pressed on the winger rotation—Rashford and Saka replacing Gordon and Madueke—Tuchel was quick to dismiss the suggestion that departing players had underperformed. "You focus too much on individual positions," he said tersely. "It's not like Marcus for Anthony and everything is solved. Anthony did well, Marcus did well from the bench and now it's a turnaround. Noni did well, now Saka has a chance to start. It's units on the side. We attack on the side and they all play into this. It's not just about Marcus or Anthony."

The most significant tactical tweak concerns Rice's absence and Bellingham's repositioning. Tuchel revealed two considerations underpinned the decision: managing Rice's workload and monitoring the midfielder's yellow card situation.

"I'm taking care of Declan's situation," Tuchel explained. "He's got a knock but is ready to play, though I'd like to manage his minutes. He has a yellow card, so I want to see how this match plays out. Is it intense? Are there lots of duels? How is the referee with cards? I need to get a feel for that. Declan knows the thinking, which is why Jude goes into the eight position and Morgan takes the 10."

The message was unmistakable: with knockout football looming, Tuchel is balancing immediate requirements against the bigger picture.
