Tuchel Dismisses Boos as 'Disappointing' After White's Eventful Return in Uruguay Draw

Thomas Tuchel has criticized the section of England supporters who booed Ben White's introduction to the pitch against Uruguay on Friday evening, calling the reaction "disappointing" and counterproductive to the squad's cause.

White's return to international football marked a significant moment—his first appearance for England since withdrawing from the 2022 World Cup squad following a disagreement with then-assistant Steve Holland. Under Tuchel's management, the door has reopened for the Arsenal defender, and he seized the opportunity with a tap-in finish from a Cole Palmer corner delivery to give England the lead.

However, the evening proved complicated. After receiving a hostile reception from portions of the home crowd, White found himself at the centre of the match's pivotal moment when he was penalized for a defensive challenge that the referee deemed a handball offense. Federico Valverde converted the spot-kick to secure Uruguay a 1-1 draw.

Speaking to ITV Sport afterwards, Tuchel remained adamant that the penalty decision was incorrect. "It was not a penalty," he stated flatly, before adding that while White's defensive action was perhaps overly ambitious, it hardly warranted such a severe punishment.

When pressed on whether White's goal might rehabilitate his standing with the fanbase, Tuchel expressed hope but acknowledged the frustration. "I hope so. This happened before to some players here which is disappointing because I don't think it helps anyone. There was a mixed reaction," he explained.

Tuchel's broader assessment of the performance was measured. He praised his side's overall display against a Uruguayan team that had arrived with their strongest XI, as he'd been warned by manager Marcelo Bielsa months prior. "Absolutely OK with the performance. We tried and tried and were the better team overall," Tuchel said. "We had some big chances from set-pieces. We were forced into changes. We had a lot of new players and for all of that I am grateful for the test."

Harry Maguire also stepped forward to defend White, describing his contribution as "brilliant" following his introduction to the match. "A bit crazy, scoring the first goal," Maguire reflected. "I can't say anything about the defending for that one—if that was me in that position I'd be attempting to block the shot as well. That's what we've got to do. That's a real soft penalty."

Maguire added that White had impressed throughout the week's preparations, bringing positive energy to the camp before delivering on the pitch with his opening goal.
