Madueke Gets The Nod While Foden, Shaw and Tomori Miss Out on World Cup Squad

Thomas Tuchel will name his England World Cup squad on Friday, and the selection process has already thrown up some notable casualties alongside Harry Maguire's shock exclusion.

Arsenal's Noni Madueke has made the cut for the summer tournament, joining fellow Gunners Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice in the 26-player contingent heading to North America. But there's disappointment for three other high-profile names.

Phil Foden, Luke Shaw and Fikayo Tomori will all be watching from home as Tuchel finalises his plans for the competition. Shaw had been included in the manager's initial 55-man provisional squad and there had been genuine calls for the Manchester United left-back to feature, yet he finds himself surplus to requirements. Newcastle's Dan Burn and Manchester City's Nico O'Reilly are instead set to receive call-ups to fill the defensive slots.

Tomori's omission continues the run of bad luck for the AC Milan centre-back, who will also be absent from the squad.

Meanwhile, Chelsea's Levi Colwill appears to have done enough to force his way into contention despite his recent injury troubles. The defender has impressed in his comeback matches and interim boss Calum McFarlane spoke glowingly of his return to action, describing him as possessing "really good mental strength and character" after working his way back from a serious layoff.

Alan Shearer had already tipped Colwill for inclusion before the news broke, suggesting the centre-back "played really well" and had "played himself into the England squad." When pressed on whether his extended absence might concern selectors, Shearer acknowledged the gamble but remained convinced of the Chelsea man's quality, calling him "one of the big plusses" for his club in recent weeks.
