Maguire Breaks Silence on World Cup Snub: Tuchel's FaceTime Bombshell

Harry Maguire has finally explained the circumstances surrounding his exclusion from England's World Cup plans, laying bare the peculiar manner in which Thomas Tuchel delivered the news.

The Manchester United defender, who had been among the club's standout performers during the 2025/26 campaign, found himself among the disappointed when Tuchel opted instead for Dan Burn, Jarell Quansah, Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi and John Stones.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Maguire described the notification process as decidedly awkward. Rather than the traditional phone call or face-to-face meeting, Tuchel chose to break the news via FaceTime to Maguire and other rejected players.

"It's quite an awkward call," Maguire explained. "He FaceTimes everybody. It's quite a unique way to do it. It makes it harder probably for himself to see our reactions and things like that."

When pressed on whether the England boss offered concrete reasoning, Maguire revealed Tuchel's rationale centred on continuity. "He said he's gone with the four lads that he got through the qualifying in the autumn camps where he felt like they did well during those six games," Maguire said. "But he did say that he can't really give me an excuse."

The 33-year-old cut a philosophical figure when discussing the blow, acknowledging football's harsh realities whilst making clear his disappointment. "I was really disappointed. I thought I did enough to be in the squad and I thought I could have helped the lads out there," he said. "I thought I would have still had a part to play on the pitch and off the pitch as well."

Yet the sting cuts deeper when considering the timing of his career. At 33, with the next World Cup still distant, Maguire recognised this may represent a genuine last opportunity. "I'm 33 now, so 37 at the next World Cup. It looks far away," he admitted. "I wasn't demanding to go and start the games. I'd have been happy to play one minute as long as I was there with the lads. So no, it was disappointing."

Despite his evident frustration, Maguire insisted he respects Tuchel's decision and his 26-man selection. "The manager's made a decision and he's gone with his 26 and it's part of football and I'll move on quick from here," he concluded.
