White's England Return: From Exile to Tuchel's Squad After Injury Reshuffle

Ben White's England exile has come to an abrupt end. The Arsenal defender, absent from the national setup since the 2022 World Cup, finds himself back in Thomas Tuchel's squad for the March internationals against Uruguay and Japan—a remarkable turnaround for a player once deemed surplus to requirements.

White's omission from England duty has been one of international football's more curious sagas. He departed Qatar early on the grounds of "personal reasons," with subsequent reports suggesting a falling-out with then-assistant Steve Holland. His absence persisted through Euro 2024, a tournament where his defensive versatility might well have proven useful as the Three Lions reached the final before succumbing to Spain.

The 28-year-old's stock appeared to have fallen irreparably when he reportedly declined selection under Gareth Southgate's watch, citing frustration at his standing in the pecking order. Former Liverpool forward Stan Collymore was unsparing in his criticism at the time, branding White's refusal an embarrassment and declaring him unworthy of future consideration—notwithstanding his admission that the defender possessed genuine tactical flexibility.

Tuchel's appointment has evidently altered the landscape. Speaking to the media after taking the England job, the new boss offered a measured assessment: "He'd love to be back in the squad. I just think it's a bit too early now given the seriousness of the injury that he had." Yet the manager's tone suggested optimism about White's trajectory, noting that conversations with the player had been encouraging and that his return to the bench represented progress. "Now it's just a question of getting more minutes, more rhythm," Tuchel explained.

The call-up itself came about through circumstance. Jarell Quansah's withdrawal through injury opened a door for White, with Newcastle winger Harvey Barnes also drafted in as cover for Arsenal's Eberechi Eze. The announcement arrived on Monday morning, confirming both players would feature in fixtures at Wembley—Uruguay on Friday, 27 March (kick-off 7.45pm), followed by Japan on Tuesday, 31 March (same time).

White's four England caps now stand to increase, while Barnes—whose sole senior appearance came in October 2020—gets another opportunity to stake a claim. Whether White can translate this opening into something more substantial remains to be seen, but after nearly four years in the cold, his return to the fold marks a significant shift in his international fortunes.
