Emery Plays Down Elliott Prospects Despite Salzburg Display; Madrid Speculation Dismissed as Premature

Unai Emery has offered little encouragement regarding Harvey Elliott's prospects at Aston Villa, even after the Liverpool loanee delivered an encouraging display in Thursday's 3-2 Europa League victory over Red Bull Salzburg.

Elliott's arrival at Villa Park on a loan-with-option-to-buy arrangement was billed as a significant piece of business during the summer, yet the move has failed to deliver for all parties concerned. The midfielder has barely featured for the Midlands side this season, making his rare starting appearance against the Austrian outfit all the more noteworthy.

His performance in that match proved encouraging, helping Villa overturn a deficit to secure three points and top their Europa League group. However, Emery's post-match comments suggest this breakthrough moment hasn't altered the broader picture.

"His situation doesn't change," the Villa manager stated firmly. "He played a fantastic game today but our idea with him doesn't change."

The comments come amid Emery's own links to a high-profile exit, with reports suggesting he stands as the leading candidate to replace Álvaro Arbeloa at Real Madrid. The Spanish giants are exploring managerial alternatives as they assess Arbeloa's tenure, which has produced mixed results across competitions despite a more positive domestic campaign.

When pressed on the Madrid speculation, Emery offered the briefest of responses: "Nothing to say about it."

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has since provided clarity on the situation, suggesting premature excitement around any potential appointment would be misplaced.

"Several candidates are being discussed internally," Romano explained, emphasizing that Real Madrid have not formally begun their managerial search. "At Real Madrid, the process to select a new manager has not started yet."

"There are no negotiations, no talks, and no guarantees," Romano stressed. "It is simply a potential plan for the summer."

For now, Emery remains committed to his Aston Villa project, which has produced a remarkable campaign featuring a genuine Premier League title push alongside their Europa League progression as group winners—all achieved despite a transfer window that many viewed as underwhelming at the time.
