Edu's Forest Gamble Unravels as Marinakis Loses Faith in Troubled Appointment

The wheels appear to be coming off for Edu at Nottingham Forest, with the Brazilian's position at the City Ground reportedly hanging by a thread. What was supposed to be a marquee appointment to catapult the club forward has instead become a cautionary tale of how quickly fortunes can shift in football.

Edu's stock had never been higher. His credentials as Arsenal's first-team technical director were sufficiently impressive that owner Evangelos Marinakis dangled a lucrative pay rise to lure him into his sprawling football empire. On paper, it looked like a masterstroke. The club, under Nuno Espirito Santo, had even qualified for European football.

But behind the scenes, cracks were already forming. Reports of tension between Nuno and Edu emerged, forcing Marinakis into an uncomfortable choice between his two lieutenants. He backed Edu. Nuno departed. In came Ange Postecoglou, who lasted only a matter of months before Sean Dyche took over. Dyche, too, has since been shown the door.

The spending, meanwhile, tells its own grim story. Forest have splashed nearly £200m into the transfer market, yet they find themselves perilously close to the trapdoor. John Percy of the Telegraph has now reported that Edu's job is in serious jeopardy, with sources suggesting his exit is not a matter of if but when.

What's particularly damaging is how thoroughly Edu has been marginalised. He was brought in officially last July after a period of gardening leave following his November 2024 appointment, tasked with overseeing recruitment, performance, squad strategy and player development. Now, he's been sidelined from key decisions—he wasn't even in the room when Dyche's sacking was decided.

Several of Forest's transfer missteps have been laid at Edu's door. The most glaring example is Oleksandr Zinchenko, the Arsenal left-back who arrived on loan on deadline day. His time at the club proved so dismal that Forest had to arrange for Ajax to take over the deal mid-season. When your high-profile signings unravel that spectacularly, the finger-pointing rarely stops with anyone else.

For a man who built his reputation at one of England's biggest clubs, this represents a striking reversal in fortune. The Telegraph report suggests the pressure is now immense, and the writing appears to be on the wall.
