Howe Sets Clear Line: Newcastle Stars Must Show 100% Commitment or Face the Bench

Eddie Howe has drawn a firm line in the sand regarding his squad's commitment levels, with Anthony Gordon squarely in the frame following persistent transfer chatter linking the winger to Liverpool.

The Newcastle boss fielded questions ahead of Saturday's home clash with Bournemouth, and his message was unambiguous: anyone harbouring doubts about their future at St James' Park need not expect regular football.

"I won't play a player if I don't think they are 100% committed to the club and its future," Howe stated bluntly. "I have to do what I think is right for the team."

Gordon's name has been doing the rounds all summer as a potential target for the Reds, a move that would represent a homecoming of sorts for the England international, who grew up supporting Anfield despite beginning his senior career at Everton. The forward came tantalisingly close to joining Liverpool after an impressive first campaign on Tyneside in 2023/24, though that deal ultimately collapsed.

The desire to make the switch, however, has never fully dissipated. TEAMtalk reports that Gordon is now "open" to a departure, with Newcastle facing financial pressure to offload at least one significant asset during the off-season due to their absence from European competition.

Alongside Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes are among the players potentially facing the exit door as the club attempts to balance the books.

Howe acknowledged that he regularly speaks with his players about their situations but stressed he only addresses transfer speculation when absolutely necessary. His approach is straightforward: monitor their application on the training pitch.

"After I had the chat with Sandro, the biggest thing I look for is the commitment to training. That will be the same with Anthony and every player," he explained.

The Newcastle chief also defended his squad against the notion that media noise should impact their performances. "Players who are high-profile like they are here, they're in the news all the time for loads of different reasons," he noted. "You have to adapt to it and try to play to your best level with the noise around you. I don't think any player can use that as an excuse towards performances."

On his own position at the club, Howe was equally resolute, insisting his passion for the project remains undimmed. "My fire is burning very, very strongly," he said, echoing recent sentiments expressed by Mikel Arteta.

The 46-year-old made clear he's willing to do whatever serves Newcastle's interests, even if that means stepping aside. "If that's me leaving to help the club, then of course that's something I'll do, I've got no issue doing that," he stated. "It's not about me."

However, Howe believes he's the man to drive the club forward. "But if I believe I'm the right person to take the club forward, which I do currently right now, then I'll do that and I'll fight to the end. I'll fight harder than I've ever fought before, but it's about making sure that those two things are aligned."
