Iraola's First Reds Setback: Real Madrid Snap Up Dumfries for €20m

Andoni Iraola's tenure at Liverpool hasn't even begun, and he's already facing familiar frustrations. The Reds have watched Real Madrid muscle in on yet another transfer target, securing Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan for a reported €20m release clause.
The 30-year-old Dutch right-back was very much on Liverpool's radar following the managerial change at Anfield. Back in May, it became apparent that Dumfries' representatives were actively pushing for a move to Merseyside, with then-manager Arne Slot keen to reunite with his compatriot and bolster the club's defensive flank. Slot's subsequent departure from the club—he was sacked by Fenway Sports Group—didn't dampen Liverpool's enthusiasm for the Netherlands international, with Iraola's arrival suggesting the pursuit would continue.
That hope has now evaporated. Madrid's move was swift and decisive. By late evening on June 2, transfer specialists had confirmed the Spanish giants had agreed personal terms with Dumfries and his camp, with the player himself reportedly viewing the Bernabéu as his preferred destination. The deal was wrapped up within hours, with Madrid triggering the release clause and formal procedures set to follow.
Dumfries brings considerable pedigree to the Bernabéu. At Inter, the 71-capped Dutch international has been a consistent winner, collecting two Serie A titles, three Coppa Italia trophies, and three Supercoppa Italiana medals. He featured in Inter's Champions League final runs in both 2023 and 2025, demonstrating his ability to perform on European football's biggest stage.
This represents another significant setback for Liverpool in the transfer market. The club has already endured painful departures this summer, with Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving for Real Madrid last year despite multiple contract offers, and Ibrahima Konate joining the Spanish side on a free transfer after the Reds failed to convince the French defender to extend his Anfield stay.
For Iraola, the message is clear: competition for top talent remains fierce, and Madrid's chequebook continues to prove decisive.
