Liverpool Swiftly Dismiss Nunez Return Speculation

Whispers of a Darwin Nunez homecoming have been doing the rounds this June, but Liverpool have moved decisively to extinguish the flames before they spread any further.

The 26-year-old Uruguay international, who departed Merseyside for Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal less than a year ago, has apparently become the subject of fevered speculation about an Anfield return. Yet the Reds are having none of it.

On June 15, Uruguayan journalist Martin Charquero posted to his 381,000 X followers that Nunez would be re-signing for Liverpool in the summer window, with confirmation expected only after Uruguay's World Cup involvement concluded. The report was credited to Juan Pablo Romero from Carve Deportiva, a Montevideo-based sports radio station, lending it an air of authority.

The problem? Liverpool insiders were left scratching their heads. According to The Liverpool Echo's Paul Gorst, the club experienced genuine surprise at the claim. Multiple sources within the organisation quickly moved to rubbish the notion, whilst Nunez's representatives privately dismissed the developments as wide of the mark.

The background noise around Nunez's situation is straightforward enough. The former Liverpool number nine has barely featured for Al-Hilal since February, having lost his place following the Saudi outfit's recruitment of Karim Benzema in January. His contract with the Pro League side could theoretically be terminated, leaving him free to move.

Barcelona have also been mentioned as a potential destination, with Nunez reportedly keeping tabs on developments.

At Liverpool, the striking department has been stretched thin. Hugo Ekitike faces an extended spell on the sidelines due to an Achilles rupture, leaving Alexander Isak as the sole senior recognised forward at manager Andoni Iraola's disposal.

Even so, the Reds have made their position abundantly clear: a Nunez comeback isn't happening. Whatever the appeal of bringing back a familiar face on a free transfer—perhaps with revised expectations—the club simply won't revisit that particular chapter.
