Liverpool swoop for Leicester's Motsi as academy raid continues

Liverpool are set to add another promising prospect to their academy ranks, with Leicester City's Darren Motsi having opted to make the move to Anfield this summer.

The Reds have developed a keen eye for youth recruitment in recent seasons, with their strategy of acquiring talented youngsters and nurturing them toward first-team involvement proving increasingly fruitful. Rio Ngumoha, signed from Chelsea's academy in 2024, has already broken into Liverpool's senior setup, whilst Trey Nyoni—who arrived from Leicester's youth system in September 2023—has progressed to 20 first-team appearances and one assist at just 18 years old.

Motsi follows a similar trajectory to Nyoni, departing Leicester to join Merseyside. The 15-year-old left-footed attacking midfielder, capable of playing wide on the right or in a number 10 role, has impressed at Leicester's Under-21 level this season, netting three goals and providing two assists across 19 outings. In Premier League 2 specifically, he registered the same three goals and two assists across 11 matches.

According to academy football analyst @OleKristofferE, posting on X at 6am on 31 May, Motsi represents "one of the country's biggest talents" and an "enormous coup" for Liverpool. The account noted that having featured throughout Leicester's entire U21 campaign at such a tender age speaks volumes about his potential.

Slot departs, Iraola waits in wings

Elsewhere at the club, Liverpool's ownership structure Fenway Sports Group is navigating managerial upheaval following the sacking of Arne Slot on Saturday. The club's official statement acknowledged the difficulty of the decision whilst paying tribute to Slot's achievements, particularly guiding the Reds to their 20th league title in his inaugural season—a remarkable accomplishment built on "outstanding coaching and leadership every single day."

The statement also highlighted Slot's compassion during "one of the most difficult periods imaginable" following the loss of Diogo, before concluding that "change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward."

Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola is widely tipped to fill the vacant position, having turned down approaches from both Crystal Palace and Bayer Leverkusen.
