Palace Ready to Wave Goodbye to Mateta as Aston Villa and Forest Circle

Jean-Philippe Mateta's time at Selhurst Park appears to be drawing to a close, with Crystal Palace bracing themselves for his departure amid concrete interest from two Premier League rivals.

The 28-year-old has made it abundantly clear he wants a fresh challenge, prompting the Eagles to accept that their long-serving forward could be heading elsewhere this January. Both Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest are circling the France international, with the Midlands clubs eyeing him as the missing piece in their respective campaigns.

Mateta has been a cornerstone of Palace's attacking play since arriving at the club, netting 40 goals across 93 appearances under Oliver Glasner's stewardship. His contribution helped the Eagles mount a respectable FA Cup run last season, but his head has clearly turned elsewhere in recent weeks.

The departure would represent another hammer blow to Palace's season, following the summer sale of Ebere Eze to Arsenal and Marc Guehi's January switch to Manchester City. For Glasner, already frustrated at the lack of transfer backing, it could prove the final indignity. The manager has already confirmed he will not extend his deal beyond the current campaign's conclusion.

Industry figures have weighed in on the situation. Keith Wyness, the former chief executive at Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen, believes Palace should cash in at the valuation. Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, Wyness suggested the club should "take it, move on and rebuild as best they can," while acknowledging that Palace possess the infrastructure and talent pool to bounce back.

"They've done it before," Wyness noted. "At that sort of level, if they get £40million for Mateta right now, I think they should accept it. Eventually they'll need to retain some talent, but this season might not be the moment to make a stand."

Mick Brown, formerly Manchester United's chief scout, has confirmed that Palace are resigned to letting their man leave. According to Brown, Mateta has already tested the market waters, with his agent actively sounding out potential suitors. His inclusion in the France squad only intensified his desire for a move.

"His head is clearly elsewhere," Brown observed. "If somebody meets their valuation, they'll accept it. The crucial thing is that Palace then get a replacement, because they can't afford to weaken the squad any further than it already has been."
