Glasner Braced for Guehi Departure as City Circle Tightens

Oliver Glasner is keeping his feet firmly planted in reality when it comes to Marc Guehi's future at Crystal Palace, with Manchester City lurking as a potential suitor in the January transfer market.

The Palace boss has made clear he harbours no illusions about what could unfold should City come calling with serious money. Ruben Dias's six-week hamstring injury layoff has left Pep Guardiola's side searching for defensive reinforcements, and Guehi—with his contract running towards expiration this summer—suddenly represents an attractive proposition at a reduced cost.

Palace's track record suggests they won't surrender their captain lightly. The club already demonstrated their resolve by turning down a £35m bid from Liverpool for the England international during the summer window. Yet Glasner's comments reveal a pragmatic understanding of the financial realities at play.

Using a characteristically candid metaphor, Glasner outlined the club's balancing act during his press conference. "Nothing in life is one-dimensional," he explained. "Let's say you have a nice car but you need money because it's cold and a window at home is broken, and somebody offers you crazy money for your car. You say, 'No, I don't want to sell my car. I love my car. But I don't want to freeze.' Then you say, 'If I can get the window and even a new roof, you can have the car. But I would like to keep it.'"

The parallel to Guehi's situation was unmistakable. Everyone at Selhurst Park wants him signing fresh terms and staying put, Glasner suggested, but circumstances change when summer approaches and financial pressures mount. "On the other side, the contract ends this summer and if somebody is coming and you are freezing, there will be a moment when the club says, 'Now the financial issue is more important than the sporting issue and we have to do it,'" he added.

Should Palace lose their captain, the defensive cupboard would be considerably bare. Maxence Lacroix, Jaydee Canvot and George King represent the only fit centre-back options currently available. Chris Richards remains sidelined with an ankle problem, whilst Chadi Riad is expected to return later this month following cruciate ligament surgery.

Glasner did emphasise that departures aren't always failures. When ambitions diverge between player and club, a parting of ways often benefits both parties. "If a player feels too good for a club, it is better to sell him, and if a player is not good enough for a club, you also have to sell him," he stated. "To get the best out of your squad, it must be a match."

The Austrian manager was blunt about his acceptance of market forces. "I'm not so naive as not to know that if a massive offer comes from City and he wants to do it, it will happen," Glasner concluded.

City have demonstrated their winter spending appetite before, investing close to £190m on Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Juma Bah just twelve months ago.
