Ronaldo's Al-Nassr Tantrum Earns Scathing Rebuke: "Self-Indulgent Nonsense," Says Murphy

Cristiano Ronaldo has drawn fierce criticism for staging what amounts to a strike at Al-Nassr, refusing to make himself available for selection over the club's transfer strategy—a move that's likely to land him in hot water.

The Portuguese superstar sat out his Saudi club's victory against Al Riyadh on Monday, citing frustration with the financial backing the club has received from the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF). His gripe centres on the disparity between Al-Nassr's modest recruitment and the lavish spending enjoyed by rivals Al-Hilal, who recently secured Karim Benzema from Al-Ittihad.

Al-Nassr's only significant arrival this window has been 21-year-old Iraqi centre-back Hayer Abdulkareem, hardly the statement signing a five-time Ballon d'Or winner might expect alongside him.

According to talkSPORT's Ben Jacobs, Ronaldo's grievance runs deeper than simple annoyance. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid man appears particularly miffed that Benzema—his former teammate—ended up at Al-Hilal rather than staying put or joining Al-Nassr itself. Some observers in Saudi Arabia suggest Ronaldo felt the Frenchman's move undermined the sporting project.

Others point to a broader structural complaint: why did Al-Hilal receive such substantial funds ahead of the Club World Cup when Al-Nassr's allocation proved considerably tighter? The club's supporters have voiced similar concerns.

Jacobs outlined the likely consequences: "He's expected to be fined, he's likely to be punished for not making himself available for selection."

Such theatrics have earned him little sympathy. Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy was scathing in his assessment, questioning why a player of Ronaldo's considerable means couldn't simply bankroll his own squad improvements.

"Maybe Ronaldo could give some of his earnings to the club to then help them get more players," Murphy said on talkSPORT. "I've never heard of something so ridiculous in all my life—self-indulgent nonsense."

He went on to highlight the absurdity of the situation: "It is absolutely bizarre when you consider the earning capacity of Cristiano and Benzema. For either of them to be disillusioned, upset about the way their clubs are run, to put it mildly, is almost unthinkable."

The Portugal international has been mooted as a potential return option for Manchester United, but his current conduct at Al-Nassr suggests he's more interested in flexing his muscles than rebuilding his reputation.
