Ronaldo Digs In at Al Nassr: Star Refuses to Play Over Management Grievances

Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly taken a stand at Al Nassr, with the Portuguese forward now refusing to play for the Saudi Pro League club amid simmering discontent with how the outfit is being run.

The 40-year-old, fresh off his well-documented exit from Manchester United following a fractious spell under Erik ten Hag, appears to have found fresh frustration in the Middle East. His departure from Old Trafford came after a high-profile interview where he lambasted the club's hierarchy, the Glazer family, and several United legends—an incident that hastened his contract termination in late 2022.

Ronaldo subsequently joined Al Nassr at the start of 2023, where he has since notched 111 goals and 22 assists across 127 appearances. Yet the veteran's time in Saudi Arabia has been far from trouble-free. Last year, he reportedly eyed an exit to join a Club World Cup competitor, frustrated by his club's failure to land either the Saudi Pro League title or the AFC Champions League crown.

He eventually committed his future to Al Nassr, extending through 2027, but fresh tensions have now emerged. With fixtures looming—a Saudi Pro League clash against Al-Riyadh on Monday and a Friday encounter with Al-Ittihad—Ronaldo may be unavailable as he takes issue with the club's direction.

According to Portuguese media outlet A Bola, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner is dissatisfied with how the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia manages Al Nassr relative to other PIF-backed clubs in the league. The crux of his complaint centres on investment levels. Manager Jorge Jesus has reportedly gone without the reinforcements he requested, with just one addition this January—21-year-old Iraqi midfielder Haydeer Abdulkareem—arriving through the door.

Ronaldo's tendency to let frustration boil over when circumstances don't suit him is well-established. His current stance at Al Nassr suggests that even a lucrative Saudi contract cannot keep the spotlight-hungry superstar content if he feels the machinery around him is failing to match his ambitions.
