De Zerbi Faces Summer Heartbreak as Romero Signals Tottenham Exit

Roberto De Zerbi's summer is about to get considerably more complicated. Tottenham's Argentine defensive colossus Cristian Romero has made clear his intention to depart North London, a development that will land like a thunderbolt at the Lilywhites despite their manager's determination to keep him.

Romero remains one of the Premier League's most commanding centre-backs and is locked into a contract running through summer 2029—a deal he only penned twelve months ago. Yet the lure of pastures new has apparently proved irresistible to the 26-year-old.

The defender's name has long circulated among Europe's elite. Manchester United have previously registered their interest, whilst Barcelona and Real Madrid have both been touted as potential suitors. Now, with Romero part of Argentina's 2026 World Cup squad, fresh pursuit has intensified. Barcelona and Atlético Madrid are both actively tracking the former Atalanta man, as are Serie A champions Inter Milan, according to journalist Gianluigi Longari.

"Cuti Romero wants to leave Tottenham despite De Zerbi's high regard for him," Longari posted on X. "The Argentine defender is being closely followed by Barcelona and Atlético Madrid. Costs too high for the Italian clubs, which still appreciate him as much as Inter does."

The financial demands surrounding any deal appear substantial enough to price Italian suitors out of the running, at least for now. Romero's trophy cabinet hardly lacks lustre—he lifted the Europa League with Tottenham last season and counts the 2022 World Cup alongside Copa América triumphs in 2021 and 2024 among his honours with Argentina.

As Romero contemplates his future, Tottenham have already begun reshaping their defensive ranks. Luka Vušković, the 19-year-old Croatian prospect who spent 2025/26 on loan at Hamburg, has been sanctioned for departure. Brighton and Hove Albion have agreed terms to sign the teenager in a deal worth an initial £46m fixed fee, with a further £4m available through add-ons and a 20 per cent sell-on clause. The package could ultimately exceed £50m, with Tottenham retaining matching rights and Vušković committed through June 2031.

The medical examination is scheduled for the United States.
