Romero Slams Spurs' "Disgraceful" Squad Depth as Injury Crisis Deepens

Cristian Romero wasted little time airing his grievances once the January window slammed shut, taking to Instagram to lambast Tottenham's threadbare squad in the wake of Sunday's 2-2 stalemate with Manchester City.

The Argentine defender was hauled off at the interval with an illness, leaving Radu Dragusin as Spurs' sole operational centre-back. Micky van de Ven sat out through injury while Kevin Danso remained sidelined following a toe problem picked up during the Champions League victory in Frankfurt.

Spurs mounted an unlikely comeback from two goals down—courtesy of Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo—with Dominic Solanke's brace rescuing a point at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

With casualties mounting across the squad, Romero vented his frustration online. "Great effort from all my team-mates yesterday," he wrote. "They were incredible. I wanted to be available to help them even though I wasn't feeling well, especially since we only had 11 players available – unbelievable but true and disgraceful."

He added: "We'll keep showing up and taking responsibility to turn this around, working hard and staying together. All that's left is to thank all of you for being there and for always supporting us, the fans."

Tottenham's January business has been modest by comparison to the ambitions suggested when Daniel Levy departed. Conor Gallagher arrived from Atlético Madrid for £34m, left-back Souza joined from Santos for £13m, while teenage forwards Mason Melia and James Wilson were recruited from St Patrick's Athletic and Hearts respectively.

Supporters will inevitably question whether more could have been done, particularly with Frank under mounting pressure and the club languishing 14th in the table.

Frank defended the club's approach during his pre-match press conference ahead of the City clash. "The club worked relentlessly to try to do the best they can to improve the squad," he said. "I mean it, we can't be too obsessed with short term fix that's not helping on the long term, because if we don't do that, all the hard work we put in now can be limited for the future."

He highlighted the Semenyo pursuit as evidence of the club's commitment. "There's no doubt it's clear that the club wants to sign Semenyo. They did everything," Frank explained. "I think that's a clear signal that the Lewis family is very committed. That's a big signing with finances and all that."

Frank maintained his stance on selectivity. "If we can't find that quality, then it's definitely better to take the right decision. It's not the same that we're just getting quality players going forward, because we all know it's not that easy."

He concluded by pointing toward the summer window. "If we're not, for whatever reason, able to get another player in, or players in this window, then for the summer, it's a big summer ahead, and I'm sure we'll see big improvements there."
