Clarke Walks Out of Interview After 23 Seconds: 'We're Going Home'

Steve Clarke didn't hang around for pleasantries following Scotland's chastening 3-0 defeat to Brazil, storming out of his post-match interview after barely two dozen seconds and returning only to deliver the grim verdict: "I think we're going home."
The Tartan Army's tournament hopes now hang by a thread. A draw would have almost certainly sealed passage to the last 32, but instead Scotland's capitulation leaves them with just a 43% chance of reaching the knockout stage, according to Opta's calculations.
Defensively, it was a masterclass in self-sabotage. Scott McKenna's careless possession allowed Vinicius Junior to waltz past Angus Gunn for the opener, before the Real Madrid winger struck again moments before half-time when both Gunn and Nathan Patterson were caught napping under a Bruno Guimaraes delivery. Matheus Cunha put the gloss on Carlo Ancelotti's side's dominance after the interval, with Scotland thoroughly outclassed throughout.
When BBC presenter Eilidh Barber first asked for Clarke's immediate thoughts, the Scotland boss offered eight words: "We made it difficult for ourselves, that's it."
Pressed on whether Brazil's ease in finding the net was frustrating, Clarke's frustration spilled over. "We gave them the goals, we gave them the game they wanted. Disappointing," he muttered, before abruptly departing when the conversation turned to Scotland's precarious position.
He returned moments later for a fuller reckoning. "We made it difficult for ourselves," he repeated. "We gave them the goals, we gave them the game they wanted. Disappointing."
Clarke acknowledged the physical toll on his players in the oppressive heat and humidity, but there was no escaping the fundamental truth. "It was unbelievable the shift the players put in, the ones who played 90 minutes in that heat and humidity were outstanding, but we have to be better if we want to compete at this level," he said.
The damage was done early. "In the first four or five minutes we passed the ball well and then made a mistake. You cannot do that at this level because it puts you on the back foot and it becomes a long night," Clarke explained.
With qualification hopes hanging in the balance, the Scotland manager offered a damning assessment of his side's tournament so far. "For sure I think we're going home. Only Scotland can get a winnable first game and then get number five and number six in the world."
