Townsend backs Delap exit as Alonso prepares Chelsea overhaul

Xabi Alonso faces a busy summer in the transfer market after Chelsea's disappointing tenth-place finish, and one familiar voice reckons the incoming Spanish manager should start by moving on striker Liam Delap.

The Manchester City academy product arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer for £30m from Ipswich Town but has managed just three goals across 47 appearances this term. According to former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend, that simply isn't good enough – and a fresh start elsewhere would benefit everyone involved.

Speaking to OLBG, Townsend outlined his concerns about the 21-year-old's adaptation to life in west London. "When you compare his performances here to what he showed at Ipswich, there's been something holding him back," Townsend explained. "Whether it's the system, the step up in profile, or simply not clicking with the environment – something isn't right."

The pundit highlighted Delap's struggles when introduced from the bench, rarely making an impression when given opportunities. "I've watched him come on as a substitute on numerous occasions and there's been nothing that screams world-class investment," he continued. "Nothing that makes you think, 'Ah, now I understand why Chelsea paid all that money.'"

Townsend drew parallels with other high-profile misfits, noting that moves don't always work out regardless of pedigree. However, he was particularly scathing about Delap's overall demeanour on the pitch. "He's looked like someone capable of dominating the Championship, not a top-flight striker. There's an awkwardness to his play, a lack of comfort that suggests Chelsea might not be the right fit."

The former midfielder suggested Delap needs regular football and a chance to be the focal point of an attack. Everton, desperate for striking reinforcements with neither Beto nor Tierno Barry proving adequate, could provide that opportunity. "If he goes somewhere where he's the main man, playing consistently week in and week out, that's where he needs to be," Townsend said.

"He's got to believe in himself more and get minutes under his belt. Sitting on the bench only erodes confidence and sharpness. If I were him, I'd be pushing for a move in the summer."

Townsend finished by suggesting this isn't the version of Delap supporters expected to see flourish at Chelsea. "The aggressive, clinical finisher we all anticipated – we haven't glimpsed that at all. A fresh challenge elsewhere might be exactly what he needs to rediscover his form."
