Chelsea Eye Verbruggen Raid as Rosenior Seeks Sanchez Successor

Chelsea are weighing up a summer approach for Brighton's Bart Verbruggen as manager Liam Rosenior looks to address concerns with current keeper Robert Sanchez, according to reports.

The 23-year-old Dutch international has impressed sufficiently to land on the Blues' radar, despite initial competition from Manchester United having seemingly cooled. Verbruggen arrived at the Amex from Belgian outfit Anderlecht in July 2023 and has since racked up 83 Premier League appearances.

His first season saw him rotate with Jason Steele under Roberto De Zerbi, though he became Brighton's established number one following Fabian Hurzeler's appointment. A slow start to his Premier League career saw him wait seven months for his first clean sheet, but he has since recorded 21 shutouts across 93 top-flight outings—five of those arriving during the current campaign.

The Netherlands' regular between the sticks boasts room for development at just 23, and his composed distribution and shot-stopping prowess have caught Chelsea's attention.

Sanchez Falls Short of Requirements

According to Football Insider's Mick Brown, a former Manchester United chief scout, Chelsea remain unconvinced by Sanchez's ability to provide the requisite stability in their back line. "He's not that sort of calming, consistent presence you want at the back to control things. He can be a bit all over the place at times and that's not good," Brown explained.

Verbruggen, by contrast, would tick considerably more boxes. Statistical analysis reinforces this assessment: the Dutchman scores 70.1 in shot-stopping rankings, substantially ahead of Sanchez's 62.1—placing the Chelsea man among the division's six weakest performers.

Brown added: "Verbruggen is a good goalkeeper. He's composed in possession and he's a good shot-stopper, so he'll tick a lot of boxes for Chelsea in that respect. I can see that happening in the summer, definitely. It's another Brighton player going to Chelsea – they seem to have a good relationship there, which always helps."

Another Chapter in Chelsea's Brighton Connection

A Verbruggen acquisition would mark the fifth Brighton departure to Stamford Bridge since Todd Boehly's 2022 takeover. The club recently secured Brazilian forward Joao Pedro for £55 million and secured Facundo Buonanotte on loan.

Chelsea's last significant Brighton shopping spree came in 2023, when they spent a combined £125 million on Sanchez and Moises Caicedo, following Marc Cucurella's £62 million move south of the year prior. The 2024/25 campaign saw them pause their Seagulls recruitment, though they have also invested considerably in compensation packages for Brighton's backroom staff, including former manager Graham Potter.

Verbruggen originally cost Brighton roughly £15 million. Should Chelsea pursue him seriously, that fee would likely quadruple—a reflection of his development and Premier League experience.
