Fernandez Set to Force Chelsea Exit With Official Transfer Request

Enzo Fernandez looks set to take matters into his own hands and formally request a move away from Chelsea come the summer transfer window.

The Argentine midfielder has been among the Stamford Bridge side's standout performers this campaign, yet his relationship with boss Liam Rosenior and BlueCo ownership has become decidedly fractious. Last month, Fernandez fired a barb at both Rosenior and the owners whilst simultaneously expressing interest in a potential switch to Real Madrid—hardly the actions of a man content with his lot.

The fallout proved swift. Rosenior yanked Fernandez from the squad for matches against Port Vale and Manchester City, drawing a line in the sand over what he termed a breach of the club's cultural standards. The manager explained at the time: "I spoke with Enzo an hour ago. As a football club, with me as part of the decision, he won't be available for tomorrow's game or Manchester City next Sunday. A line was crossed in terms of our culture and what we want to build."

Interestingly, the Chelsea dressing room reportedly wanted Fernandez reinstated for the City clash, leaving Rosenior in an awkward spot had he backtracked on his stance.

Spanish media outlet El Chiringuito suggests Fernandez has now resolved to lodge an official transfer request in a bid to engineer his departure. The catch? Chelsea are demanding €150 million (£130m) to let him go. Real Madrid have emerged as interested parties, though they're apparently content to play a waiting game and hope the fee drops before the window closes.

Whether this represents genuine transfer intent or leverage for contract negotiations remains genuinely unclear, though pundit Paul Merson reckons the midfielder has already had the conversation with Rosenior. Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson suggested: "I think Enzo has sat down with him and told him I want to leave. I've seen Cucurella have a meeting with him. But Enzo has gone in and said I want to leave."

Merson went on to criticise the manager's handling of the situation, arguing that dropping a key performer serves nobody well. "One thing you have to do as a manager is never chop your nose off to spite your face," he said. "Let the fans look after that situation. Not you. Play him on the pitch. He is one of Chelsea's best players. It's disappointing as a Chelsea fan, and it's only good news for Man City."
