Fernandez Edges Closer to Real Madrid Exit as Chelsea Put Two Keepers Up for Sale

Chelsea's midfield lynchpin Enzo Fernandez appears to be edging towards the Bernabéu, with Spanish reports suggesting the World Cup winner is 'close to joining' Real Madrid this summer.

The Argentine has been among Chelsea's standout performers this season, racking up 18 goal involvements across 45 appearances in all competitions. Yet recent developments suggest his time at Stamford Bridge is drawing to a close.

Following Chelsea's midweek Champions League exit, Fernandez offered an ambiguous response when quizzed on his future. "I don't know, I don't know," he said, before adding: "There are eight games left and the FA Cup. There's the World Cup and then we'll see."

While Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, and Saudi Pro League outfits have all circled the midfielder, Madrid appear to be the frontrunners. According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, the Galácticos could sweeten the deal by including players in any potential transfer to reduce the overall fee required to prise Fernandez from West London.

Chelsea's hierarchy, it seems, are now resigned to his departure. The report notes: "At Chelsea, they are beginning to accept that Enzo Fernandez could leave the club in the next transfer window. The lack of results and the absence of trophies have weighed heavily on the player's decision."

The midfielder has made little secret of his frustrations lately, taking particular issue with the departure of former manager Enzo Maresca. "I don't understand it either," Fernandez told Mexican outlet TUDN. "Sometimes there are things that we as players don't understand, how and in what way they try to manage things."

He continued: "Obviously, it was a departure that hurt us a lot because we had an identity. He gave us an order, even though, as is the way of football, sometimes it's good and bad. But he always had a very clear identity when it came to training and playing, and obviously his departure hurt us a lot, especially in the middle of the season, it cuts everything short."

Meanwhile, the Blues are making moves elsewhere. The club has opted to place goalkeepers Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen on the transfer list, with their inconsistent performances this season having tested the patience of the board. A Fichajes report states: "The poor performance of both goalkeepers during the current campaign has exhausted the patience of the higher management, who are seeking a major overhaul."
