Fernandez's Chelsea Future in Doubt as PSG Circle Following Maresca's Exit

Enzo Fernandez is weighing up what comes next at Chelsea in the wake of Enzo Maresca's surprise exit, with Paris Saint-Germain now keeping close tabs on the Argentine playmaker's availability.

The midfielder was instrumental to Maresca's blueprint at Stamford Bridge but must now adapt to life under new boss Liam Rosenior, who took charge this month. The Italian's sudden departure on New Year's Day following a falling-out with the Chelsea board has left Fernandez contemplating his next move, having enjoyed a particularly strong working relationship with his former manager.

Fernandez took to social media to express his disappointment at Maresca's departure, posting a heartfelt tribute to the departing coach and his backroom team. "Mister, thank you for everything shared and experienced during this stage, I learned a lot and I value every advice and experience," the midfielder wrote, adding that the pair had lifted two trophies together—a period he described as unforgettable.

According to L'Equipe, Fernandez is now "wondering about his Chelsea future" in light of Maresca's exit, and the Parisian club are actively "checking his name" as they hunt for midfield reinforcements. The World Cup winner won't be a bargain, mind you: signed from Benfica for £107 million in January 2023 and tied to a contract through 2031, he commands a premium fee. His performances this season and last have done nothing to diminish that valuation.

Last term, Fernandez contributed nine goals and 17 assists across all competitions. This season, he's already notched eight goals and three assists, continuing his upward trajectory in a Chelsea shirt.

PSG's interest stems from a perceived dip in form affecting their midfield machinery. With Vitinha anchoring the unit, both Joao Neves and Fabian Ruiz—the latter two instrumental in last season's Champions League success—have shown signs of stalling. The French club are keen to inject fresh ambition into that department.

An insider close to a PSG player painted a blunt picture of the current malaise: "Not bringing in more competition is a mistake. They should have brought in guys who are eager to prove themselves. Right now, we're seeing players who are playing more casually. The dip in form is in their desire. In the counter-pressing, you can tell it's not quite the same team anymore. There's a lack of ambition to earn their place, players who are too comfortable."

However, PSG view Fernandez as a long-term prospect rather than an immediate solution. No January swoop is on the cards, meaning Chelsea's Argentine star should remain at Stamford Bridge for the remainder of the season—at least for now.
