Chelsea Players Push Rosenior to Reinstate Fernandez for Manchester City Clash

Enzo Fernandez's teammates are making a case for the midfielder's immediate return, with reports suggesting they've asked Liam Rosenior to overturn his suspension ahead of Manchester City's visit to Stamford Bridge.

The Argentina international has been sidelined following controversial comments defending former boss Enzo Maresca and leaving the door ajar for a potential Real Madrid move. His absence was enforced for the FA Cup victory against Port Vale, and Rosenior confirmed he would also miss the City fixture.

"I spoke with Enzo an hour ago," Rosenior explained at the time. "As a football club, with me as part of the decision, he won't be available for tomorrow's game or Manchester City next Sunday. A line was crossed in terms of our culture and what we want to build."

The manager elaborated on the circumstances surrounding the disciplinary action, tracing the difficulties back to Chelsea's collapse against PSG early in their recent troubles. "A lot of this stems from a difficult 10 days," Rosenior continued. "I'll go back to the first game against PSG, it all fell apart in 15 minutes and there was a huge emotional dump that led into the next three games. The comments from Enzo, and Cucu's interview, stems from that. It stems from a good place where they want the club to succeed."

Despite the sanction, Rosenior was keen to emphasise his respect for the player: "Enzo, firstly, as a character, a person and a player, I have the utmost respect. He's frustrated because he wants us to be successful. In terms of the decision, it's not all about me, or the sporting directors, the ownership, the players, we are aligned in our decision. The door is not closed on Enzo. It's a sanction. You have to protect the culture and in terms of that, a line was crossed."

Yet according to Argentine journalist Veronica Brunati, the Chelsea squad view Fernandez as indispensable for the Manchester City encounter and have made their feelings known to the gaffer. "Understand that Enzo Fernández's teammates have asked the coach to lift his suspension — they see him as key for the clash vs Manchester City," Brunati reported.

While the midfielder's public comments have suggested wandering eyes towards Madrid, behind the scenes the picture appears rather different. Brunati claims Fernandez's genuine priority remains securing his future at Chelsea through a fresh contract. "Sources close to the player insist his priority is to stay at Chelsea FC, with talks focused on a new deal," she stated. "This is not just about an extension, but a contract upgrade that reflects his role and importance within the team."

The midfielder has been one of Chelsea's standout performers this campaign, delivering consistent contributions from the centre of the park. His absence against Port Vale proved manageable, though facing Manchester City without his midfield presence represents a considerably stiffer test of depth and resourcefulness.
