Shearer Demands More From Chelsea as Pedro Debate Intensifies

Alan Shearer has raised questions over whether Joao Pedro carries sufficient pedigree to fire Chelsea back towards championship glory, as the Blues continue to stumble in their quest for consistency.

Chelsea's frustrating stalemate with Burnley on Saturday—a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge—leaves Liam Rosenior's outfit fourth in the Premier League standings, though Manchester United could leapfrog them with victory against Everton on Monday evening.

Pedro opened the scoring inside four minutes, only for the match to unravel when Wesley Fofana received his marching orders with 18 minutes remaining. Burnley, hovering above the drop zone, capitalised through Zian Flemming's late leveller in injury time.

The Brazilian has accumulated an impressive 14 goals across all competitions since his summer switch, yet the Newcastle legend remains unconvinced about his ceiling. Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer acknowledged Pedro's undoubted talent whilst stopping short of declaring him the missing piece in Chelsea's jigsaw.

"Joao Pedro is a really, really talented player," Shearer reflected. "Whether he's enough to take Chelsea to the next level and to where they want to be in terms of titles and the Champions League is a different conversation. But in terms of his ability, he's excellent."

Gary Lineker, meanwhile, has been considerably more effusive in his praise. The former Tottenham and England striker has drawn parallels between Pedro and Arsenal's Kai Havertz, suggesting both operate as similarly gifted technicians who glide effortlessly across the pitch.

Lineker highlighted how Pedro has perhaps flown under the radar compared to fellow summer arrivals, grouping him alongside the likes of Alexander Isak, Niclas Füllkrug, Alexander Sesko, and Matheus Nunes as the window's marquee signings. "He's technically very gifted," Lineker observed. "Both he and Havertz are similar type players—very technically gifted and they both almost glide around the pitch. I think he's a really good player."

Micah Richards, the ex-Manchester City defender, offered a more nuanced assessment, emphasising Pedro's versatility as a number 10 or false nine rather than a traditional centre-forward. "When you look at his goal record it's very good considering the positions he takes up on the pitch," Richards noted. "He goes very deep and links the play very well, he's very clever and really good in the air actually. I think he's done ever so well and we knew he was excellent from his time at Brighton."
