Rosenior's Chelsea Move Teeters on Brink as Extraordinary Condition Threatens Deal

Chelsea's pursuit of Liam Rosenior to succeed Enzo Maresca is advancing but remains decidedly unfinished business, with the prospect of the whole arrangement unravelling still very much on the table.

The Strasbourg boss has become the Blues' primary target following Maresca's dismissal on Thursday morning. The club had grown weary of their previous manager—both sides' relationship had deteriorated—while the team's recent form offered little comfort, managing just one win in their last seven league outings.

Rosenior represents a significant leap up the managerial ladder for someone still relatively untested at elite level, though he has impressed during his tenure at the French club. Three names have been eliminated from contention: Francesco Farioli is locked in with Porto, Andoni Iraola has publicly committed to Bournemouth, and Cesc Fabregas remains devoted to Como.

The complications run deeper than typical managerial recruitment, however. Chelsea and Strasbourg share ownership through BlueCo, which creates a peculiar wrinkle in proceedings. Before rubber-stamping Rosenior's appointment, the ownership group insists on identifying a suitable successor at the Ligue 1 outfit—not just any warm body, but another promising young tactician capable of maintaining their project's trajectory.

Yet complications have emerged behind closed doors at Stamford Bridge. An insider has flagged a "big split" within the club regarding Rosenior's suitability, with the 41-year-old having made a specific request for a particular new player as part of his negotiations. The identity of this target remains undisclosed.

German journalist Florian Plettenberg has cast further doubt on proceedings, warning that despite negotiations progressing encouragingly, the deal could still implode. Rosenior's existing Strasbourg contract runs until 2028, and unless something extraordinary transpires, he's expected to become Chelsea's next head coach—but nothing is guaranteed just yet.
